Nobody has ever asked me. I don’t think I’d have a problem with telling them if they did myself, but I know some people are funny about that sort of thing.

I would agree that I found find it rude when asked by most people (one of my BMs asked, but that was totally okay and in the context of a related discussion).

However, whether or not it is considered rude depends on culture – in some cultures there is an enormous tradition of bargaining and pride taken in having secured a great deal.

I remember once buying earrings by myself in a souk in Morocco without my friend present.  When I got back home, she hounded me about them.  “How much did you pay?”, she demanded.  I lied and divided the number in half.

No matter what answer you give, the response is the same:  “Too much!  I know a guy around the block who could get you 10 of those for that price…”  🙂

I guess I’m tacky then? I had asked my best friend how much her ring was, because SO and I were looking at rings and I was feeling incredibly guilty about how much it was and wanted to know how much a beautiful ring like hers would cost. She didn’t have a problem with telling me.

No, I often get a “So when are you thinking of upgrading?” though, so I think they don’t ask the price because they know their rings are worth was more than mine….

I’ve only had one person ask me how much my ring cost; friend who was honestly curious because she and her FH were in the same financial boat that my FH and I were in. I had no problem telling her…

It’s nobody’s business unless you want them to know.

When people ask me and Fiance is around, he’ll say “why are you going reimburse me for it?”

That gets em everytime! 🙂

I’d never ask how much someone’s actual ring was, but I’d ask about the size of the diamond etc and gauge the price from there. My friend got engaged last year and her ring was tiny – I actually peered in the local jeweller’s window on my way to work to see if I could spot her ring. When I saw the price sticker on the same ring I thought: poor girl and stingy FI! Which is silly because she was totally hapy with it!

I suppose wanting to know how much someone spent is one-upmanship, or keeping up with the Joneses. You want to make sure your Fiance spends as much as theirs did, or if you already have a ring you feel superior if your Fiance spent more or if your stone is bigger. It’s silly really, along the lines of men comparing their pe****s!

@morkiemama:  hahaaaa!!!!  I love it!!

No one, thankfully, has ever asked me such a dumbass question.  I have only been engaged for a month so time will tell.  If someone does have the gall, I will DEF keep the following replies handy:

“suck it” (one of my favorite retorts!)

and asking the rude person how much they weigh. HA!

You go, girls!
