No, the bridesmaids’ gowns do not need to be made of the same material as yours.

Traditionally, the decision of long vs. short dresses is made based on the time of day of the wedding — long dresses for weddings after 6 p.m.; street-length dresses for earlier in the day.  However, these days, many brides simply choose whatever style they prefer.

ETA:  I had a 6 p.m., formal wedding in May, and my bridesmaids were all in long dresses.

Nope they do not need to match! I wore lace my bridesmaids wore silk.

I would say it depends on the weather and what you want the overal look of your wedding to be. I got married in August and it was brutally hot when we were outside for 4 hours taking pictures so I am glad I chose short. I also wanted them to at least have a fighting chance of them wearing the dresses again so that was another motivator for short.

I don’t think they need to match. I had a taffeta gown and my bridesmaid’s dresses were chiffon. It all looked fine. 🙂 I don’t think the length particularly matters either. Just choose what you think will look the best with your own wedding!

@graygodess20:  I don’t think the bridesmaids dresses have to match your dress. My dress was organza, and my bm dresses were chiffon. They are both “flowy” materials, so they went well together, but I don’t think it would have looked terrible if they had something like satin. It’s really which ever you prefer. Check out a variety of dresses, and see what you like!

No, the materials do not have to match. My dress was taffeta and my BMs wore satin. I was also married in May and my ladies wore long dresses. It didn’t matter to me if they wore short or long, but both preferred long.

My dress is organza the girls are in satin.
My wedding is in may also, and they will be in short dresses 🙂

I think really, it’s about your vision and what you see.. I don’t know that there necessarily is a “right or wrong” way to do it

There is no need to match fabrics, but the overall vibe of both dresses should work together.

Not at all! My gown was silk taffeta, and my MOH’s dress was chiffon. I think we looked pretty good together. 🙂

They don’t HAVE to match, but you can have them match if you want. I don’t care myself, other than I don’t want them wearing Satin. I honestly don’t know yet if I’m having anyone other than my sister, but she/they will be wearing gray dresses, and satin will make them more Silver, which might sound silly, but I want the colors to be ‘right’. I also just don’t like satin in general…

The fabrics don’t need to match. Usually the length of the Bridesmaid or Best Man dress is determined by the formality of the wedding. If you are going for a formal/black tie, usually BMs wear long dresses, but a more casual look short dresses work better. But ultimately, it’s up to you, you’re the bride!
