MemberIt’s a small hole punch. Don’t get it mixed up wtih your new one. Store it in a separate place, like a sealed envelope. I stored it in the same place and took the WRONG one (my old name) by accident and missed Paris on our honeymoon, but got it replaced (more $$) just in time to get to Venice.
MemberIs it illegal to use your old passport and just book the ticket in your old name? That’s what I planned on doing since it expires in two years. I mean, how would they know, if all you have to show is your passport and the name on it matches the ticket?

MemberJust went thru it, all of it. Had to renew for our honeymoon, then just went thru the name change.
After the renewal, I received my old one back with a hole in it & was led to beleive that the same will happen with the name change.
However, if you decide that you don’t want to give it up, say it’s been destroyed. If you say it’s lost or stolen, you have to file another report before you can get a renewal or name change – which is a long process.
MemberI did this recently. I changed my name and applied for a new passport with the new name reflected. I did not alter my current one (didn’t know that was a thing). I got a new passport.
YES I got my old passport back! I (like you) would be upset if all my cool stamps were gone. My new one arrived and a couple days later they mailed the old one (with the original marriage certificate & extra photo). The holes were punched in the front to indicate it’s not valid.
