Texas here, (Dallas specifically) sometimes there is specific lanes marked by a white line that are for passing only, but usually without that the left lane is the fast lane (Keeping in mind the speed limit of course, but not a lot of people here do that), as everyone driving slow and exiting are in the right lane and the middle ones are in betweeners. It is not allowed to drive in the left lane if you are slow, and if someone comes behind you (going faster than you are) you are supposed to move over to let them pass you. But some people don’t comprehend that here lol.

It’s not illegal in my state to drive exclusively in the left lane, however I have noticed it in many southern states along the east coast (like North Carolina). I was traveling to Charlotte a few months ago and can’t tell you how many signs and digital ‘billboards’ I saw on underpasses stating that the left lane is for passing only and all other traffic should keep right. The idea is that people riding the left lane actually causes more/worse traffic, because, as a PP said, you get a lot of people in what is traditionally designated as the fast lane either driving the exact speed limit or below.

And, I agree with others that there’s really no benefit to sitting in your car for a bit after starting it. Unless you’re preoccupied with something else, you’re just wasting gas idling.

motherbee33 :  That’s not a thing where I live. Left lane is used to be driven in, not just for passing. This post is so weird.

whitums :  Well in California, where there are more people and probably where more bees on this board are from, that’s not a thing. OP should’ve specified location before writing her weird post.

motherbee33 :  I’ve been guilty of driving my car right away in the cold, but I’ve gotten better since we installed the remote start. I don’t drive in the left unless I’m passing (although I will stay there and pass 10 cars if everyone is going super slow and there is no one on my tail). People who drive the speed limit in the left lane regardless of the flow of traffic are incredibly stupid and unsafe and I hate them. If people are trying to pass you gtfo of the way!

One thing I noticed that MA people do and apparently is not a thing in other states is that the first car in line wanting to take a left goes as soon as the light turns green. Oncoming traffic knows and expects (because they all do it themselves) but people not from around here don’t get it!

The left lane is called the “passing lane” for a reason. I can’t stand people who drive in the left lane and force you to pass them on the right. It’s illegal in the state I grew up in (Michigan), and the one I live in now (Ohio), but I still see people do it all the time.

kristin36890 :  “Vehicles must be driven in the right lane except when overtaking and passing another vehicle proceeding in the same direction; when making a lawful left turn; when the right half of the roadway is closed to traffic while under construction; upon a roadway restricted to one-way traffic; or when the roadway is not of sufficient width. Slower traffic must keep right.”

kristin36890 :  Actually in California you are required to move over if you are going slower than other traffic, regardless of speed limit. This is why there are so many people who sit in the left lane like they own it….no awareness of proper driving technique or law.

I’m confused. What’s wrong with starting your car and driving right away???  Unless it’s an old diesel it should be fine.

I get really frustrated when people don’t realize there are 2 lanes and they drive in the center and they are typically driving reallllllly slow.  I probably look like the jerk who is speeding up to get around them, but pay attention people!  Traffic is already TERRIBLE in the city, when you cut out an entire lane on a main street, it’s making it worse!

Left lane as a passing lane is not a thing in CA. When I moved from NJ, I was soooo confused by the driving here but it’s apparently not a law. (Althought it should be, it might help control the traffic a little better lol)

There’s also no cold weather here so no one just sits and lets their car “warm up”… not a thing lol.

I for sure pass people who are driving slow. Even if I do get caught by the same red light, at least I’m not following the catepillar any more. If people are passing you, you aren’t keeping up with traffic.

I also live in Los Angeles, and I’ve never heard of the left lane being only for passing. That would be impossible with the sheer amount of traffic we have… all lanes are packed at all times. I actually laugh to think about this trying to be inforced.

I also drive as soon as I start my car, why wouldn’t I? I’m not trying to be mugged!

California bee and I was so surprised when I first drove out of state and people moved over to the right! Here all lanes are for driving all the time (although it’s nice when slow pokes move over to the right).  It’s not a LAW!  That’s hilarious! I just though other states had more polite drivers hahaha!
