A FB friend posted recently that if you don’t bag your own groceries at Trader Joe’s, you’re an asshole. So I guess I’m an asshole. But in my defense, the TJ’s next to me is new, and they keep their bags behind the register (don’t know if that’s how they all are), and I only remember to bring my reusable bags 20% of the time, if even. Plus, the cashiers are master baggers. It’s like freaking Mary Poppins. I feel like I’d just get in the way.
I will say at the big grocery store, though, I always bag if there’s no bagger.
So, what do you do?

I usually bag at any store if it’s going to speed up the process, and that includes TJ. I rarely go so always remember my reusable bags since it’s such a special occasion for me! So it makes sense for me to dig them out of my purse and start bagging as soon as the cashier starts ringing everything up.

Uh oh… I didn’t even know that was a thing! My TJs has the bags behind the register too, so except for when I remember reusable bags (embarrassingly infrequent), I would have to ask them for a bag and then do it myself?? That seems awkward. I will definitely be watching other people more carefully next time I’m there, to see what they do!
ETA: I was a grocery bagger when I was 15, and always always bag my own groceries if theres no bagger at another store where bags are more accessible

most people here bring their own bags (we have a plastic bag ban). I try to do my own bagging, but sometimes they’re really fast and take care of it while I’m doing the credit card stuff.

where are you located? I’m in NYC and all the associates do the bagging for us, there is barely any space to bag ourselves

I don’t bag,Ii just try to make conversation to make it less akwaard, lol. But same here, all the TJ’s have the bags behind the register, so they start bagging while I finish paying with a card. Never thought twice about it.

If there isn’t an associate there to bag my groceries, I will do it myself, in the interest of time. But I don’t think it’s expected and I don’t think you’re an a-hole for not doing it.

I’m not sure if it’s just my TJs, but unlike a regular grocery store, not all lanes at mine have a bagger and a cashier. The baggers move around depending on the needs, but usually if there’s no bagger at the checkstand I’m at, I just bag my groceries myself. I don’t do it anywhere else, but it’s totally normal at my TJs, and they always thank you for helping

We usually help our TJ cashier bag but the bags are accessible to us and they always appreciate it! I say if you don’t really have access to the bags then it’s not really your responsibility to bag.

I have issues with this subject, trader joes, shoprite, a & p and other grocery stores. This is what the cashier gets paid for correct? I dont care what store it is, its part of their job, they just dont get paid to scan and run the product down the belt for you to bag.
I refuse to bag at any store unless im on self check out for under 10 items, so hey.. look at me Im an asshole too wooohoooo.

There’s only one store around here where we bag ourselves(everyone has to) All the others the cashiers do it. I don’t even know how that would work. It would just slow everything down.

I do it at locations where the bagging is done on the counter right in front of me and I’m otherwise twiddling my thumbs, but location I usually shop at with my SO has a lower surface behind the counter for bagging that only the cashier can reach. As a kid I was expected to try to help bag when I could, it gets you out thst much faster and it comes with a thank you.

Our Trader Joe’s has the bags out next to the registers, so we usually help bag. If the bags were behind the register, I don’t think we would help because it would feel awkward!

Hmm… Glad I’m not the only one. I’m in western PA, and the majority of the replies to my FB friend’s post were pro-bagging and bashing on people who are too “lazy” or “privileged” to bag. 🙁 It’s a silly thing to get upset about.

I’m so salty that we don’t have Trader Joe’s in Canada..
But, I bag my own groceries. I actually get annoyed when someone tries to do it for me, I’m insistent on doing it myself because, I feel like I’m better at it than anyone whose ever tried to help me..
I also never forget my own bags because I hate that you can’t organize things properly in a plastic bag. I need the structure of my reusable bags.
I’m a verrrrry particular grocery shopper. Its one of the few things I take very, very seriously.
