    @Brace2014:

    You said the fact that women are oppressed in other countries should be the staple argument for feminism. Are you then ok with women being completely repressed in those countries, given that you are not a feminist? Also, just because equal pay isn’t as big a deal as what some of the women in third world countries endure, doesn’t mean it is an invalid reason for feminism, that’s like saying someone shouldn’t be upset about X because someone is worse off. If that’s the case nobody can be upset about anything, ever, because someone is always worse off.

    There are many reasons for feminism. Really, my staple argument for feminism is that women and men deserve to have the same rights.

    @MrsRevolutionize:  Great points, and well articulated on a difficult subject!

    I absolutely believe that no person should be restricted from opportunities based on their sex, or preconceived gender roles. However, I would not argue that that means that anyone can do anything. I still believe that there are differences of ability between all individuals, and that out of that reality not every woman can do every job, and not every man can do every job. But to say a (wo)man can’t do a job just because of their sex (unless it is childbearing and birth) is ludicrous.

    @jenilynevette:  I think plenty of us work what you might consider a man’s job, but unless we talk about it all the time you wouldn’t know it.

    I currently work on a farm. Throwing hay bales when it is 40C, for example, can be very exhausting.

    I’m also studying to have a career as an Equine Sports Massage Therapist and that takes an incredible amount of strength.

    I remember stories my grandmother would tell me how thigs were 100 years ago. She used to work in a factory and if women got married they’d lose their jobs so many women got married in secret. Then if they got pregnant they’d have to back pedal and explain that they were married to save face, but still lose their jobs…thankfully that’s now illegal and not the norm.

    The original Civil Rights act didn’t include sex as a protected class for discrimination. It was added by a southern legislature who thought it would kill the bill since people would find the idea of equal rights for women preposterous.
