I agree with the others. I prefer when companies offer Paid Time Off that can be used for vacation, sick, mental health days, etc. In my opinion, companies who offer sick days are rewarding those who take less care of themselves than those who do. As a manager, as long as an employee has enough days off in the bank, it doesn’t matter to me if it was used for a vacation, to get better from an illness, or to interview for another company. Employees are entitled to days off. Good managers will recognize that and encourage their employees to do so.

i have the type of job that is super demanding and i rarely even get the chance to call out – so i have like 300 hours of sick leave. so when i call out sick, my boss KNOWS im sick, so i dont feel bad about it. but with the wedding coming up and my stress level i have done a few mental health days (mind you they were migranes) because i cant literally do my job if i am in pain of any sort.
but i really dont like folks who call out all the time for no reason. makes more work for the other folks in the office (and for my job if you call out you best not be seen out and about in the city!)

yup. Have done it, but not that often. I get two weeks vacation but no sick days (really sucks).
I typically don’t do it now, despite the temptation because I really can’t afford it! If I could… that’d be a different story 😉

I don’t do it unless I’m schedule for a vacation or actually sick. My mental health days are Saturday and Sunday when I don’t work or volunteer.

I never have yet. I expect that to change eventually.

Never. I’m pretty lucky that we have separate vacation, personal, sick days, and bereavement days. So I’ve never just called out. I’ve never even taken a sick day, but that’s a good thing bc I haven’t really been sick in the past two years. But I can’t say I’m not jealous of my friends that call out sick and then lay out all day.

In the 5 years I’ve been here, I’ve rarely have ever ‘called out’. If I have, it was because of something I genuinely needed to take care of that day. Not just to veg all day. However, I usually plan mental health days a little ahead of time. I think, if you have the time to take and you’re not totally screwing anyone over, you should take time to just have some ‘me time’. I’m lucky in that my boss (while for the most part she’s a passive aggressive jerk) is really flexible about my requests. If I give her even just a days notice, she doesn’t mind. As long as you get your work done, ya know?
