I originally bought an Essense of Australia dress at a sample sale for $100.  While it was pretty and looked ok on me, I was not in love with it.  One day, I walked into DB looking for a Bridesmaid or Best Man dress and they were unpacking the new dresses.  I fell in love with the dress and bought it on the spot.  I could have spent more money on a dress the second time, but I haven’t seen anything that compared to how much I love this dress.  I tried on a few really high end dresses in Minneapolis with my mom, but I still loved my less expensive dress so much more than the more expensive one.  So glad I didn’t – then did settle.

If my budget was bigger, I would probably have a more over-the-top gown, but I don’t really think that I settled. I love my gown and it makes me feel beautiful when I have it on, so there is a strong possibility that I would have still chosen the gown that I did.

When I first saw the title of this thread I thought it meant settling on your fiance for money! Hahaha. After reading the post it makes much more sense now 🙂

we choose dresses based on how much we are able to afford, so i think if everybody had more money they would pick a nicer dress, but you can say that about everything else in life.

I havent bought my dress yet but I can already tell you that I will most likely settle due to budget. I’m pretty much limited to only Davids Bridal but I would really LOVE to not go with them (had a crappy experience as a bridesmaid). I’ve gone on one dress shopping excursion there and I did find one dress that I liked but it wasnt “the one”. There are dresses that I absolutely freakin love elsewhere but they are atleast double my budget. We’re waiting till January to go again when their next line comes out so who knows, maybe I will find my dream dress!

@SweetRose2011: I bet your dress is beautiful!  I mean, it made you CRY!  I’m glad you found one you love.

And, almost  EVERYTHING about my wedding would likely be different if I had more money to spend.  But, I love my dress.  I didn’t try anything on that was over my budget, and I don’t look at pictures of other dresses or watch SYTTD now that I have mine.  That way there isn’t even a chance of dress envy.

Now INVITATION envy is another thing…..if only i could letterpress…..

confession: when I read the title of this post I thought that it was going to be a horribly emotional story from a bee who has realised she is marrying a man only because he was wealthy and not because she loved him!

@nmsoonerbride: I’m with you on the letterpress. Even the “budget” letterpress are too expensive for us. I would have to get a part time job just to pay for them!

Nope.

Because although I had a budget for my dress I allowed myself to go try on my dream line which was Jim Hjelm. With the plan that if I did fall in love with it I know I can get it under retail and within budget without buying new.

But at the end of the day when I went to try on JH I was not that impressed.

I LOVED my dress!

I had a far bigger budget than I used.  I’m in my 30’s and have been saving for years (in general, not for a wedding), so I could have bought a more expensive dress.  I tried on the expensive ones and found one I loved, but when I learned the price, I walked away easily with no regrets.  To me, the dress was simply not worth the dent in the savings account I had worked so hard for, and I wouldn’t have felt comfortable wearing it.  I really like the WAY cheaper dress I ended up with, and I also like knowing that I made the responsible decision.

I am, however, considering buying some extra special jewelry for my wedding day, since my dress ended up being so inexpensive.  I’ll be able to wear the jewelry for the rest of my life, and hopefully pass it down.  Way more worth it than a dress, to me.

@fleur99: Do it. That sounds like a great idea.

@SweetRose2011: Of course, if a budget was unlimited I think we’d all be wearing top of the line dresses, you know? There is automatically some form of settling with a budget.

Still, I love what I have for our budget. 🙂
