Do you feel afraid/insecure being alone outside when it is dark?

bibilicious :

No I am not afraid and I do go out alone in the dark. Not particularly often , but whenever I need to , I take public transport all the time too, at any time.

I can’t say I have never felt fear or anxiety but I am very strongly of the belief that it will never stop me doing what I want to do . I’m a white- knuckle flier too!

bibilicious :  I’m not afraid where I live right now. I live in New York City in a nice neighborhood in Queens, and in a way there isn’t a “dark” time here. My neighborhood is 24/7, even our grocery stores and produce stores are open all the time. There’s also a large hospital near where I live, so there are delis and bodegas open 24/7 to serve their overnight staff. Any time I go out there are other people walking around. There aren’t as many around at 3 a.m. as at 5 p.m., but the neighborhood is still active. I don’t worry at all walking around here, but I’ve also lived my entire adult life in urban areas. I did used to feel scared at night when I lived deep in Brooklyn (off the JMZ). My street was full of kind and friendly people, but the main drag got dicey at night and there were several halfway houses. I just took cars.

I’m slightly nervous if it’s completely dark but I don’t really let it stop me. Dusk is fine. I live in Australia so no guns or pepper spray. Crime rates overall are actually down these days, it’s just more publicised.

I wish my dog contributed to my safety, but he’s a pug and loves everybody. The only people he bites are Fiance and I.

i guess it depends where I am. I’m not terrified walking down the street alone but I am more aware of my surroundings and have done things like hold a key between my fingers, or call Fiance and tell him I’ll be home soon while sitting in a taxi so the driver knows I have someone expecting me (I had a bad experience in a taxi once that made me wary). My first job as a teenager was in a terrible area and the shop was regularly robbed, people got in fights using syringes to stab each other, etc and I would occasionally catch the train home by myself, so I’m used to potentially unsafe situations.

My city is rather unsafe with muggings reported nearly daily around my area. So yes, I would feel unsafe walking by myself after dark. It’s not a smart idea. I have been mugged before and have several friends who have been mugged.

No. Because, anything can happen anywhere, spending time worrying about what I cant control is a waste of energy and making extra stress for myself. I take necessary precautions and I’m mindful of my surroundings. I’ve lived in NYC in all my life and if I’m out after midnight it just is what it is.

I live in a big city in the US, and my immediate area is considered safe overall….but to answer your question….

I don’t feel totally safe with my husband along and a big Husky dog that runs to my side to protect me if another dog or person even looks at me! If you feel it’s not a good risk to take, then I say dont do it!  It doesn’t matter what others consider ok,it’s your safety, do what makes you comfortable.
