People eating while they work at their desk?
This is a silly unimportant post- but I’m wondering what the popular consensus is.
I work in a “cube farm” as my manager likes to put it, and there is one person near me who works through lunch everyday. The food is non-offensive and doesn’t smell… so I’ve never had a problem with it. But recently another coworker told me she gets grossed out whenever she sees anyone “with food in one hand and a mouse in the other” She thinks its unsanitary and distracting to hear people chewing and slurping while she’s trying to work. I guess my feeling is that if someone needs to work and they need to eat, they can do it however works for them- but then again we are all in a shared space and should be considerate of how you might affect others.
What are your feelings? Do you eat at your desk ? Do you hate it when people do?

Pretty much everyone at every office I’ve worked at has eaten at their desk the vast majority of the time.
There’s an occasional issue of someone heating up nasty fish or burning their popcorn in the microwave, but I’ve eaten at my desk at every job I’ve had and so has everyone else in the cube farm.

it might be unsanitary (touching mousekeyboard while eating) but at the same time, if she is not the one doing then why the big deal?
Offensive smelling foods would bother me, but otherwise, meh.

We don’t have a lunch/break room, so I’m forced to eat at my desk in my office with no windows. I hate it, but I refuse to go out to eat everyday and it’s too cold to go outside.

I work in a cube farm, too! A lot of people choose to work through their lunches quite often around here. As long as the food doesn’t smell horribly, it doesn’t usually bother me too much. I’d rather have people eating at their desks than cutting their finger (or WORSE! toe) nails at their desks 😉

We have offices so its really not a big deal. I usually close my door so no one walks in when I have a mouth full of food.

I eat at my desk most every day and the majority of people working in the cubicles around me do too. Doesn’t bother me one bit!

I am very, very sensitive to the sounds of people chewing, smacking and slurping their food. It makes me physically ill, seriously. Of course, I’m nuts like that so whatever. But at work I remove myself from that type of situation because I find it so distasteful.

i always eat at my desk, and so do most of my coworkers. it’s not like anyone else is in my cube or uses my mouse, so i’m not sure why anyone would be grossed out!

This is such a non issue that your coworker is making a big deal out of. If someone’s eating with one hand and holding the mouse with the other, CLEARLY that means that the hand they are holding the mouse with is CLEAN. Also people do use cutlery! And there are a lot of people who have finger foods etc., who tend to wipe their hands before touching the mouse or keyboard. Just on rare occasions you will find people who are total slobs and eat disrespectfully at work. But for her to paint everyone with that same brush is ridiculous!

I eat at my desk every day..I think it’s gross if I can smell people’s food or if they eat really loudlly and make noises. But otherwise i zone out, lol.

She would hate to work in my office! We all eat at our desks mostly every day. I find that I’m more productive and can multitask fairly well…so I do it. I don’t hate on anyone who doesn’t though. Your lunch is what you choose to do with it!

I eat at my desk all the time since I bring in my own lunch to work and it’s been really busy. The only thing that grosses me out is other people who eat at their desk and constantly blow their noses all throughout the meal. I have no idea what they’re eating that’s making them have to blow their nose, but the constant sound of it is just so disgusting. It’s actually made me want to go join friends in teh cafeteria!

I always eat at my desk. We don’t really have any other place in the office to eat. But I have my own office, so I always close my door during lunch. I don’t see how that can be offensive.

I really don’t care. I have done it and there isn’t anything unsanitary or gross about it IMO.
