I don’t have an assistant but since no one has responded yet I thought what the heck! I would think a nice lotion/bath set would be nice or maybe a candle. Nothing crazy but just to say thank you, i’m sure she would appreciate it.

Our department has an admin we share with another department. I got her some nice bath stuff (bath salts, body butter and olive oil soap), which is the same that I got my director and the consultant. I spent about $25 on each and it was well received. The admin does not ever reciprocate with gifts at any time, but I would feel bad not giving her something when I am giving everyone else something (what is the old saying, better to give than receive?).

I do, usually a $25 Starbucks gift card (her favorite).

@Meowkers:  If I had a personal assistant/secretary/admin that worked directly for me, I so would.

Keep the admins happy and your work life will be way less miserable!

I don’t buy anything for the office admins… but then again I only buy for my boss (my coworker and I always chip in for one for him – it’s just us 3 on the team together).

If she is your personal admin asst or secretary, then yes, I would get her a small gift or gift card. Think along the lines of a pretty scarf, Coffee Shop gift card, or something else classy.

If she’s the general office assistant or receptionist, then no.

I am an executive assistant that works in a line of other executive assistants … so I thought I’d chime in.

It sucks to be the only one in a row to NOT be acknowledged when all other assistants are being acknowledged. Be aware 🙂

Even though I really don’t want or expect anything, it sucks (not just on holidays, but for admin professionals day) when I walk down my row and everyone else has been “appreciated” and my boss has left me out cold.

I’m a secretary and I get gifts from my bosses. So do the other secretaries in my dept.

ETA: gift cards to coffee shops and lunch spots close to work are my favorite.

@Meowkers:  The answer is yes!  You want to keep the admin happy. I was an admin and for the most part everyone in my dept, especially my boss, always got me something around the holidays.  Just my advise, because this was done to me, don’t buy her anyt designer knock offs.  If you know her well enough, buy her a gift card to her favorite store.

I have 6 direct reports, one my AA. We (along with the other people in our department) do a secret santa so everyone gets something. I also host a dinner after the holidays at our office for everyone to kick back and relax. I don’t do individual gifts though. ONe of my reports got me a present this year (she is new) and it’s kind of awkward…..

I do. I work in a law firm and it’s pretty customary. I keep reading on blogs that gift cards are lazy/bad/selfish gifts to give but still, this year I will get her what I always get her: a VISA gift card. I believe that the assistants appreciate a little extra cash around the holidays to do whatever with! I WOULD! 🙂

@Meowkers:  I always write everyone thank you notes and bake cookies. This year a few select people got pen/pencil sets. I gave one to the dept secretary because sh does SO much. Ithink a little trinket and handwritten note is the absolute least you should do.

Perhaps if you have more money than me (grad student) and fewer people (i give to ANYONE who has helped me in any way all semester) give a nice gift card to a cafe or something

I’m an admin and I’ve never got a present from my Boss (been there 5 years).  The other admins and I exchange a small card/little gift but my boss and the company are as cheap as can be.

I don’t have an admin but Darling Husband does. Since he owns his own business (with a business partner) and she’s the only admin, she gets a huge bonus. They also go out for a super nice holiday lunch.

My friends with admins say the admins get a bonus (varies) from the big bosses and the immediate managers pick up a little gift card or a token gift for the admin that they are in charge of.
