My husband’s cousin is having a bridal shower in Michigan, which is also where her wedding is. We live in NC, so I’m not planning to attend. I’m not close with this cousin, since I’ve only met her once, but she still sent me an invitation. My husband and I are going to fly to her wedding, pay for a hotel, and buy her a wedding present. Is it necessary for me to send her a shower gift on top of that?

No, unlike weddings, showers do not require a gift if you don’t attend.

@Bichon Frise: I love your doggie picture. 🙂
I agree with PP, if you don’t attend the shower you don’t need to send a gift. If it were a close friend or family member, I would, but for someone sorta distant like this, no, don’t feel obligated.

I always send a gift if I’m invited, regardless of whether or not I’m able to go. I suppose it isn’t necessary, but I think it’s a nice gesture.

For my shower I did receive lots of out of town gifts, but not even half of those who didn’t attend sent one so it is not manditory.
