I’m working on my Masters now.. I’m lucky and do not have to write a thesis… I just have to present a portfolio at the end of my two years. I’m getting a degree in school counseling so it may be different with various programs. I think you can do it! Good luck!

I got my masters in public relations at Syracuse University’s Newhouse school (in NY). We didn’t have a thesis but we did have a major Capstone  that equated to about 150+ pages once completed.

However, even thought I got a masters from one of the top Communications school in the country… I currently work in retail since the job market is so tough – seriously. I’d say do grad school now and hopefully by the time you are done the job market is better!

I actually go to school in Augusta, Georgia but there are school counseling programs all over the U.S! I even think Santa Clara University has a school counseling option!

Mine’s a dual degree professional program (so i can work full time) through Purdue and Indiana University. After 3, 3.5 years of online/distance education, i’ll have both my MBA and my masters in Industrial Engineering. The only reason I’m doing it is because my company pays for it if its "relevant" to your current job, which it is. Otherwise I wouldn’t do it….

Hey Lillindy!!! I have my master’s degree in Community Psychology (my program had a school counseling track as well) and I’m currently working on my Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology at Penn State University. I went straight through school so I will have my Ph.D. in 2 years when I’m 27 years old. I have a ton of information for you if you want to chat!! I think that now would be an excellent time to pursue your master’s degree!

I didn’t have to do a master’s thesis (I don’t think that a lot of master’s programs require it), but I ended up doing one because I wanted to be marketable for the Ph.D. counseling programs. It was definitely NOT as scary of a process as I thought that it would be, I promise!!

Let me know if you want to chat about anything related to the counseling field!!! Good luck!

I do have my Masters-had to write a thesis, which I had to orally defend, take comps, which I also had to orally defend. Interestingly enough, when I got my EdS (Specialist degree-what they award you when you graduate ABD-all but dissertation) I had to write a thesis, have a review committee, etc.-but didn’t have to take comps or orally defend my thesis.

My Masters is in Interrelated Disabilities (BS in Mental Retardation) and my EdS is in Special Education.

I have a masters in exercise and sport science from Ithaca College and I didn’t have to write a thesis, just take comprehensive exams at the end for my degree…it’s definetly worth getting the master’s, helps a lot on the job front!

Okay, I’m not in the Bay Area, but I have been toying about going back to school for a School Counseling degree. I already have a Master’s in Special Education, and would need to work full time while doing the master’s. It seems like a lot of people on this thread have done it, so is this possible?

I got my first Masters at the University of Chicago, where I had to write a brief 50-page thesis, which was really not bad at all. I’m going back for my MFA at Ohio State in fiction writing, where my thesis will be … a book. Honestly, the thought of "defending" my thesis terrifies me more than the writing of the thesis itself!
