Just curious whether it’s the norm to have off on Christmas Eve. I’m considering switching to a new job but am worried I won’t be able to take this day off (family lives in another state, so i need to have off on Xmas Eve!)

We used to have it off, now we’re open, but the office closes early.

I will with my current jobs, but I haven’t always. I honestly wouldn’t turn down a higher paying, more satisfying job just because I couldn’t take that one day off of work (and I’m Christian, and my family has always celebrated on Christmas Eve), but if the job pays the same and you like where you are now then I guess that could affect the decision.

It always alternates for me. I worked Christmas Eve last year, but technically it was considered Christmas for me because I work overnights. It’s something I wanted to do so I could relax all of Christmas day.
ETA: I work in a hospital.

@galloway111: The problem is that my family lives 7 hours away, so if I don’t have that day off, it’s especially hard to travel home and have time to see everyone for the holiday.

I work in finance and we are open half a day on Christmas Eve, so we are off work by 1pm. I usually choose to work that day and take the day after Christmas off. I could request it off though. =]

We get Dec 24- Jan 2 off but it comes out of our leave bank. Kind of sucks to have to burn half my vacation then.

We’re technically open, but the vast majority of people take it off, and we have no problem getting the day off, usually.

Only if it’s a weekend. I work in corporate retail (I’m an auditor for a popular retail chain) so if our stores are open, I’m working. We normally get out a little early though.

We always do! We actually get 11 paid holidays off with our company which is awesome, new years eve and new years day, good Friday, memorial day, 2 days for 4th of July, labor day, two for thanksgiving, Christmas eve and Christmas day 🙂

I am in retail so yes I work Christmas eve, but we close early. I don’t schedule everyone Christmas eve though and I don’t mind giving people the day off as long as I have enough coverage.

Yes since I asked for it off in January when we got our benefit time calendars. Fiance asked for it off too but his supervisor hasn’t approved it yet.

I’ve never worked at a place that fully has it off. My last job we had a half day usually but it was off the books, the boss would just come in and tell us to go home. Working with the government, you don’t get it off.
