I have some just in my name, he has some just in his name and going forward anything we have to apply for credit with, we usually apply jointly.

I have a few in my name that will remain in my name only once we’re married. My mom and stepfather keep ALL finances separate, they don’t even share a bank account!

I have a checking account solely in my name and a checking account and credit card in BOTH our names. He’s got several savings accounts and a checking solely in his name and a credit card that is part of an account under his mother’s name that he’s had since he was a kid. [No, I do not have a savings account. Yes, I know I should.]

I’m actually skeptical of credit cards, so the joint one was my first. I prefer to use my debit/checking account to make sure I don’t go into debt. As it stands, we pay off the credit card every month from the joint checking account that we each throw money into. Otherwise his money is his and mine is mine. Sadly, my student loans are mine, too.

Our lease is in both our names, as are the power, water, and gas bills. Neither of us has a car payment, and each of us has one car in our name. Perhaps if we have to buy another we’ll put it in both our names.

@miss narwhal:  I’ve never had a car loan, but how do you get one if you don’t already have credit?

I’ll tell you right now, my husband made some ridiculous financial choices while he was in the military so you better beleive I have credit cards in my name!  He has copies of my cards in his name, as well, to help his credit score, but I have to make sure to maintain my credit score since for the next ten years or so, I can’t rely on his.  If your fiance or husband has a good score then great!  But it never hurts for you both to have good credit scores when applying for loans…

@oneofthesethings:  I have no clue but my bank gave me the car loan? I have since almost paid it off. I also established credit from renting my apartment and paying off student loans.
