I never leave my keys in the car. Not only because I don’t want it stolen, but also because I have had multiple vehicles that lock the doors automatically after 10 minutes or so. Plus, my house keys are on my key ring. I wouldn’t be able to get into my house or work office without taking my keys out.

@CanadianMermaid:I hope that makes more sense now.
@SuperKate: I suppose since we don’t lock our doors either that would make sense why I don’t put my house key on my key chain so then I wouldn’t need my car keys to come inside either.
@JoJo Bananas: I just thought about this as well. We never lock our doors either so I don’t need house keys.
@tksjewelry:Oh no ๐ I’m sorry that happened to you. Did you know most of your neighbors at the point where you weren’t locking your doors? Or did you live far enough away from others that you felt it was safe to leave them unlocked?
@manders83:I think it was the cars back then. Most cars now won’t even let you lock the doors if your keys are sitting in the ignition. I would be so scared if I did that.

I remove my keys but I leave them in the car. I park in the garage. My keys are always sitting on top of my center console. DH does the same thing. When we park outside we always lock and bring the keys inside. We don’t live in a great area though. My parents live in a rural area (they have 5 acres of property) and whenever we visit there, even if we park outside, we always leave the keys in the car.
DH’s mom and stepdad park in their driveway in the city. They live in a nice area, at the end of a cul-de-sac, and they always leave their doors unlocked with the keys in the car. A few months ago DH’s stepdad’s truck was stolen and a bunch of things were stolen out of MIL’s car. They were shocked! The only car that wasn’t touched was BIL’s (he’s 16) and it was the only one locked.

@SandyThePoet: wow.. I’m really sorry, that is just awful! I hope they found who did it.

Sorry, but by not removing your keys you are begging for your car to get stolen. And, honestly, if I were assigned to your theft claim after you told me that, I would laugh and put it so far on the backburner it isn’t even funny. Sorry, but it’s true. That is about as stupid as leaving your purse in the front seat with all your credit cards and social security. You are ASKING for your car to get stolen. Seriously. I really don’t get why in the WORLD people do this and then whine and complain when they do get stolen and then get pissed at the “crime rate” when it is their own damn fault. Again, sorry but this is just stupid. And stupidity like this really frustrates me because now us cops have to deal with it and we will piss somebody off because we aren’t working hard or fast enough to prevent or solve the problem they caused themselves. Protect your proporty or suck it up and deal with it when it gets stolen.

@MsBrooklynA: Yeah that’s true.. It was a honda civic, and older one. Luckily I was right next to my parents house and they had an extra key ๐

I always take it out of the ignition, but sometimes I leave the keys in the car with the doors unlocked. I park in the garage though, so nobody would see it. If I park on the driveway or street I always lock it.

Also, I voted wrong too because your title and question are completely backways. I always remove my keys. Even if I am just running back inside to pick something up. ALWAYS.

I don’t leave my keys in my car and I definitely keep it locked! That’s from years of living in dorms, apartment complexes, etc etc. When we get a house, I’m sure I’ll still lock my car. If we have a garage I may leave it unlocked, but I’ll still take the keys inside.

@MrsPinkPeony: I fixed it now. Sorry it was confusing. I don’t understand why people even break into cars. I would be really nervous someone would catch me! Did they take anything valuable?
@SandyThePoet: I wouldn’t either. I think it is my false sense of security of always knowing every single on of my neighbors that allows me to leave mine in my car. I can’t believe you went through all of that with your car. I’m so sorry ๐
@pinky44:It seems like they are making more cars with the automatic locking now as well. Do you like that better or is it a nuisance sometimes?

Yes, I do. I don’t know why I’m so paranoid about my car being stolen though. I honestly couldn’t give a shit if someone took the POS. Hahaha. But I hate when Fiance does it because he has a nicer car that he just paid off. I guess he doesn’t have any worries about it. He always leaves his keys in the car when he’s just running into a store. It drives me bonkers.

@MsBrooklynA: Not really, unless you count Disney Princess and Hannah Montana Cd’s ๐
Has anyone ever seen that show where they set up a car with the keys in the ignition with it running and watch people steal them then arrest them? http://www.trutv.com/shows/bait_car/index.html

Heck yes I remove my keys when I get out of the car. Even when I lived in a small rural town. Bad things can happen anywhere and I’m not going to make it easier for a thief/criminal to have access to my house and car.

@manders83: I was too and we have a yapper dog that can hear a squirel a mile away…and nothing.
@MsBrooklynA: When we were not locking our doors in town I lived in a culdasac and knew everyone, I had known 90% since I could remember. In the country, I only knew the neighbor up the road, but there was no crime in the area, except the occasional teenager county road party. That would have been the big excitement for that town.

Always take the keys out and lock the car with the alarm activated, and we park in our driveway. We seem to be in a safe neighborhood, but I won’t take the chance.
