Darling Husband and I are not pregnant, but have come up with a timetable to TTC. My grandmother’s name was Virginia and I love the name. If we have a girl I would love to call her Virginia Holly, and Darling Husband is on board. However, I’m concerned about ways she could be teased. :-/ For the record we would likely call her Ginny. What do you think? Would it be a horrible name to call a girl?

That’s a beautiful name, and I love that it was your grandma’s. I have a friend named Virginia, and they call her Vicky for short 🙂

LadyAprill: Oh nice! I hadn’t thought about Vicky! DH’s last name starts with a “V” so it will be kinda neat haha!

My grandmothers name was also Virginia and I love the name. We named our daughter Sophie Virginia.

Ballet513: I love that name! I love the names Sophie and Sophia! It was originally my #1 name but it seems to have become very popular all of a sudden. Sophie Virginia is beautiful!

I am all on the boat of do what you want and to hell with everyone else’s opinions, but I have never really been a fan of naming kids things that already exist (like place names or label names) or things that could easily be shortened to something teasing.
But kids can tease over anything really, so it’s kind of a toss up. I went to grade school with a girl named Francis (after her grandmother) and kids used to call her Frank because they said she looked like a boy. So there’s really no for sure way to get away from it

First off, I’m definitely in the “Who cares, go with the name you like” crowd.
But I think Virginia is a nice, normal enough name. I really have my doubts that it would elicit teasing over any other name. What would kids say, anyhow? “Durhhurhur, your name is the same as a state!”?
Go for it. Virgina Holly is pretty, and Ginny is a very cute nickname.

hollyberry4: Virginia is my mom’s name (and everyone calls her Ginny too!). I think it’s very cute. We will probably use it for a middle name if we ever have a daughter 🙂

Not that it matters, but I love the name! I grew up, and live in, VA; and have heard the name many times. This sounds weird, but it is a very “classy” name around here; I’m not sure how else to phrase it.
On a side note, how could it be made fun of? Also, are you guys Harry Potter fans?

Follydust321: arabbel: I have heard that a lot of girls get called “virgin” or “vagina” (Kids are so mean!) I’m worried that they will call her “holy virgin” or something! And I’m not too worried about the state thing. Virginia was a girl’s name before it was the name of a state!

hollyberry4: Haha yay Harry Potter! I’m sure it’s hard not to, but I wouldn’t worry too much about the teasing. I’m sure there will be other kids in her class with much, much more teasable names. Plus, kids usually aren’t clever in that way until they get a little older, and by then she will be old enough to handle it.

I’m picky with girl names but I like that one! It’s classic and historic. The nicknames virgin/vagina are mean, but if kids don’t like someone they’ll come up with names regardless (or go with the usuals, “butthead” or whatever).

I don’t love the name, I think it’s a bit old-fashioned…but I LOVE Ginny. So if that’s what she’s known as to friends and family, I guess it doesn’t matter as much what her full name is?
