If you’re prepared to have him go through life with his name constantly being mispronounced, go ahead. But most people will read it as Ehh-lie-ass.

If you’re going to refer to him 99% of the time as Eli, that definitely makes it easier tho.

I like Eli better than Elias. If you are going to call him Eli anyway, I would just go with that for the name.

I have a pretty strong disdain for names that are unnecessary. If you plan to call him Eli, why not just name him Eli? Eli is a whole name; its mature enough to be used as an adult but still sounds appropriate for a child. Is Leo short for Leonardo or Leopald?

I really like Eli, but agree with the mispronounciation if you use the entire name. I would not have pronounced it the way you spelled it out.

Usually I’m anti nickname but I like Eli (my husband vetoed it for us), so if you did find it a pain to explain Elias (I’m surprised people think it’s hard to pronounce but also think you’re pronouncing it wrong by using a hard E, lol) then just go with Eli. But as a general rule I like for kids to have the option of a full name or nickname.  Anyway good name, go for it.

I like both names! Most people will likely pronounce Elias ‘EH-lie-us’ rather than ‘EE-lie us’ but personally I prefer that. Ee-lie-us is a bit awkward to say. If you’re not actually planning on ever using his full name I’d just go with Eli, but I do like both.

I like it but would pronounce it “Eh-lie-us” upon reading it. I’ve always had a fondness for the name “Eli”, but in my ‘imaginary future kids name list’ I have Elliot/Eli.

Why not pronounce Elias the way it’s supposed to be pronounced and shorten it to Eli? Still legit in my book, and you won’t have the poor kid going through life with a mispronounced name.

It’s actually on my short list for future kid names, except I’d pronounce it “Eh-lie-us.” I think Eli is cute with Leo and unlike some others, really like names with nicknames.

I have a friend who has a kid named Elias and a friend with a dog also named this. And right now I cannot remember how they pronounce it. To me, the 2 ways dont seem that different??

The ones with the kid do call him Eli for short.

I prefer Elijah as a long form of Eli, but I don’t dislike Elias.

I love the name Elias exactly how you want it pronounced. When my husband and I have children if we’re lucky enough to have a boy I want his middle name to be Elias. It sounds so elegant to me!

What does being Leo’s brother have to do with the new baby’s name?
