I’m an elementary school teacher and my new last name ends with “izzle”. My students already laugh at me–one started coming up with a new rhyme for me every day. However, I am proud to take my husband’s last name.

I really don’t like my husbands father, he’s created a lot of problems in our relationship, hasn’t been very supportive of my husband and my husband has had to go to therapy to deal with some of the things his dad put him through as a child.  I felt like I would be giving up a part of my identity to join with a family who really, (his mum and brother excepted) haven’t been there for my husband or I, who have been violent and abusive.  I didn’t want to be associated with them.

So I was really loathe to connect myself for that reason.  But when I voiced those concerns to my husband I could see how much it meant to him to build our own family unit – so I agreed.

I’m so glad I did, I know it meant the world to him and because we’re newly married he still gets a kick out of it when people call me by my married name.  We’re starting our own little unit together and I’m proud to be his, he’s my heartbeat.

I haven’t even gotten around to doing it yet! We never recieved the marriage certificate thingy or whatever it is you get from your church afterwards (the thing you sign??)

But even if we did, I am waiting until my passport expires which is in 5 years. It’s a name, I don’t really care about it.
