Right there with you! We would love to buy but it’s so hard to save up money.

Rent, and will be for the forseeable future.  Down payments in NYC are about 25% and to buy an apartment like mine would cost about $600K.

I currently live with my mom, but in a few weeks I’ll be renting with my Fiance for just under a year.  I don’t like the thought of renting and throwing away money.  I need to own something.  We are using every penny we get as wedding gifts towards the house and I’ve put aside a certain amount every month since we got engaged.

We live in a rural area. It’s actually cheaper to buy than rent. We bought our home.

I owned (near the city), then we rented (typical leafy suburb), and now we own (in the countryside). My old house was not in the best neighborhood, so when Mr. LK and I moved in together we decided to rent in a new area to test the waters. 2 years, an engagement, and a wedding later, we bought our forever home in the same county (but different area) that we rented in. Renting helped us figure out that we really were ready for a move to farm country. It was a good transition for us.

@doxielove:  When we bought the rural development loan was still available so we did that. There was no down payment.

@doxielove:  Exactly.  We could afford the mortgage for sure.  It’s the down payment we won’t have together any time soon.

@doxielove:  One can dream. It’s the downpayment we have issues with too. Because of that, we’re stuck renting for a while longer.

We bought our home a year ago.  I know its hard coming up with the down payment but we went through FHA, you only need 3.5% down.  That might be a bit steap but its better than 20% down.
