Darling Husband and I set a budget of about $100 for Christmas. Last Christmas I think we each spent closer to $150. We do about the same for birthdays plus a nice dinner out. This year I am going way over budget for DH’s birthday (late November), so I am saying part of it is for Christmas and I will get him another small item for Christmas. As we become more financially secure I can see us spending closer to $150-$200 on each other for the holidays. We only give gifts for Christmas and Birthday, not anniversary and Valentine’s day gets a small box of chocolates.
We do not buy very many gifts for other people. Only my mom is living out of our parents and we tend to spend $50-$100 on her. My brother and I do not exchange gifts. DH’s brother lives in Brazil so we only exchange gifts when we see each other and it is more like, here are all of your gifts for the past two years. We are visiting him in February (first time seeing him in almost two years) and will likely spend $200 on gifts/things from the US that he cannot get there. He does the same for us.
I do give a few small gifts to friends and coworkers, but these are worth about $20 each and usually are homemade.
Darling Husband and I have agreed that for future children we will limit Christmas to around $150 for each kid and birthdays to $100. I am sure that will change when they get older
