I take the bus most days. It is a 3 minute walk from our front door, and the ride takes 35-45 minutes. I love being able to read, catch up on email, or just relax for a bit before getting into downtown. Downtown has a free trolley system which connects me to basically anywhere I need to go once I hit downtown.

Our city briefly discussed implementing a light rail system but talks on that have stalled. I would LOVE that option if it ever materializes.

I drive from my apartment to the train station which is 2 miles and take the train into downtown which takes 20 minutes. Total commute is under 30 minutes each way and no traffic since its the train. Pretty easy commute!

I can walk or bus to Metro, the train goes right to my office. It depends on many factors, one of which is “how much does Metro hate me today?”, but a good day takes me 35 minutes. A bad day can be over an hour.

DC commuting/traffic for ya: I live about 5 miles from my office. Around here a 35-minute commute downtown is a wonder.

Our commutes suck! I take public transport for about 45 minutes each way. Most of the time I get a seat, but if I don’t, that means it’s super crowed and it just puts you in a bad mood. The metro is expensive during rush hour, though, and my firm offers no help. I spend over $200 on public transport a month. Then, there’s my darling soon to be husband. His commute is about an hour to hours depending on traffic, and he drives and hates it. Gas is about $60 a week.

Wow, that depresses me.

I usually bike to school/work. I can do it in under 30 minutes there, and 22 minutes back if I hustle my buns. But if I have to carry a lot of books or can’t be sweaty (professionalism ftw) or am lazy, I take the bus and it takes about 35-40 minutes.

I actually love my commute! It’s an hour each way, but I love to read… It makes the commute go by so fast. I have a 3 minute walk to the commuter train which is a 40 minute ride. Then I switch to the subway for a 20 minute ride. The best part is the subway entrance/exit is INSIDE my building so I am only outside for the 3 minute walk to the station from my apartment. I appreciate it so much when it’s pouring or snowing. 😀

@Mrs. Gremmlin: I spend over $200 a month too. :- That’s really the only sucky part.

@ttn133: I’m from Seattle too! I live 2 blocks away from work so my walking “commute” is about 3 minutes.

before that, I used to walk to work for about 6 years. it was from capitol hill to downtown every day –  2.5 miles each way. I loved that walk so much, I would choose it over the bus even on rainy days! walking was actually faster than the bus in that part of town.

before that, I used to bus commute. I do have to say that some routes were better than others.  have you ever taken the 358 northbound on aurora at night? scary.

I am also a DC area commuter who uses the metro. I used to drive in from Southern Maryland but gas and park was out of control. I started using metro and that is still a pain. It takes me at least 30 minutes to get to metro then 30 on the train each way. And that is about $60/ wk for metro and about $30/ wk in gas. My company offers $50 a month plus any additional tax free which I really need to take advantage of. I would take the bus but my commute would be so much longer.

@Genuine513: I think, due to the title, those who drive are not opening/commenting on this thread. 🙂

@Genuine513: I used to work at a place where driving was the only option, but that was only because it was out of town and if I took the bus, it would have added too much time. if I drove, it would be 30 minutes. if I took the bus, it would probably be 1.5 hours and at least two buses!

but yea, I prefer to live close to where I work. the only way I would take a job that was a long commute away is if it were the most amazing job ever.

I walk and it takes me about 5 min! If I look out my window and lean to the left a little I can see my shop 🙂

I do have to drive a lot though to different vendor shops and sights but its never too terribly far. I will say that I feel so blessed to be able to walk daily. I’ve taken the bus once before in my life and I couldn’t get over how long it took. I can see the benefits but I would have a difficult time getting used to it.

I take the subway, it takes me between 12-15 mins depending on how fast I walk to the station.
