prices definitely vary… take a hair flower for instance you can pay anywhere from $12 to $80.

Some pricing is very reasonable and others are outrageous.

I agree that it varies from seller to seller but for the most part I believe it is overpriced. The handmade items are the worst IMO because the sellers put so much effort into it, they believe it’s worth more.

    I wanted a beaded/rhinestone sash for my dress…

All of them that I LOVED on etsy were just as much as the beautiful one from the bridal shop. The bridal shop ended up ordering me the sash only from an Ella dress for only $140. I know it’s professionally made, and it comes in actual sizes with the stones running ALL the WAY around the sash!

I think it’s a bit ridiculous to compare etsy’s prices to a national craft store chain or any other store becuase it’s just not the same- etsy sellers don’t have the automation, economies of scale, customer volume etc that mass retailers do. Obviously if you’re producing tiny batches of something by hand you’re going to pay for that difference.

That being said, some sellers seem overpriced compared to others, but some also seem to undercut others making it look expensive when really it’s a product that took enough time to make that is should be worth more.

Especially with the vintage section it may seem inflated- I can find something for way cheaper at goodwill, but the convenience of having it found, cleaned, and shipped to you is what bumps it up to antique store prices. I didn’t have to search all over town in various goodwill stores and garage sales to find said vase, so naturally the value is going to be found in paying several dollars more for it from etsy. (I’m collecting vintage plates for my wedding brunch so although I’ve found some things garage saling or thrifting, I realize I’m going to end up paying more for the convenience of etsy to finish off my collection if I can’t find everything.)

I think there’s something to be said in voting with your pocketbook and choosing to support the little guy.
