I’ve lost over 60lbs myself, started at 220lbs and I’m now 150lbs. When I first started losing, I was dropping 5-7lbs per week until I hit about 180 then I averaged about 2-4lbs a week and now that I’m smaller I lose 1lb a week. You drop weight quickly when you’re bigger so don’t worry, keep doing what you’re doing and be healthy!

Firstly, way to go! Seeing people make healthy lifestyle choices makes this nurse very happy.  I’ve seen so many patients who don’t take their diabetes seriously and it leads to very bad health consequences.

I don’t think you’re losing weight too fast- but please don’t get discouraged if the weight loss starts to slow down or you plateau, that is normal!

When my mom was diagnosed with Diabetes and made healthy changes to her diet and started walking (not even working out, just walking) she dropped weight insanely fast too. The more you lose, the harder it becomes to drop each pound, so enjoy it while it lasts! I am currently patting myself on the back for a .2 lb weight loss, haha.

@banstett0414:  I used to work with a registered dietitian years ago, and she indicated, along with all of the medical opinions I’ve seen, that a loss of one-to-two pounds per week is best for healthy weight loss. However, I do agree that losing more weight in the first week or two is normal, because of the water weight lost.

Since the OP is eating at least 1400-1700 calories per day, I am not as concerned for her. Given her current rate of weight loss, I was worried that she may have been eating some unreasonably low number of calories, but it doesn’t sound as if she is.

@KKG:  Awesome job! I started at 207 and am down to 165 now. I lost about the same per week as you described. How long did it take you to lose the 60 pounds?? Im down 42 pounds now and its been 6 months.

No, at your starting weight that’s not unusal, the pounds melt fast!  As you continue to slim down, the weight loss will slow, don’t get discouraged, that’s normal too!  Congrats on the weight loss!

@Beasha:   Congrats! it actually has taken me about 1 year, I fell off the wagon and gained 15lbs a few months ago but thankfully have gotten it off, so as of yesterday I weighed in at 149lbs. Now with my wedding in 6 weeks, I hope to get down to atleast 140lbs. Do you have a goal before your August wedding?!

Most of the PP’s have covered some version of this, but I just wanted to reinforce that you will likely lose faster in the beginning (especially if you have some extra weight that you’re carrying around) and will start to plateau as your body adjusts and your weight gets closer to what might be considered ideal/healthy for you.

When you hit that phase, DON’T GIVE UP!!! It’s so easy to get discouraged and throw in the towel, but stick with it and you will feel great 🙂 Congrats on your weight loss and good luck with your future goals!

@KKG:  Thank you. At least you got back on the right wagon! My ultimate goal is 135 (Im only 5’3 1/2). Im not sure i can get to exactally that by the wedding but hopefully ill be close or at least seeing the 130’s. The best part for me is seeing the new digits you know getting under 200 pounds then seeing the 180’s, 170’s, 160’s, etc. I cant wait to see the 150’s in another couple of weeks!

Initial wt loss is the easiest. Especially if you’re overweight to begin with (sorry. I’m there too). It’ll begin to taper and the closer you get to your goal, the SLOWER and harder it’ll become.

Way to go so far!

Initial weight loss is easiest, as others have said (I’m almost halfway to my goal, the first 3kg came off so much more easily than my last couple)

If you are diabetic, may I suggest you talk to your doctor about it s/he will know what is safe for you and your body. Also be careful of ot letting your total calorie input be under 1200. Your example you gave actually leaves you with 1100 for that day, once you take exercise into account.

@katedesaccord:  You are doing great! I started out a little heavier than you a few years ago and lost weight fast at the beginning also.  It will eventually start evening out around 2-3 pounds a week depending on how many calories you burn every day.  At the beginning you’re losing a lot of water weight and a little bit of muscle due to the calorie deficit.  Just make sure to do some strength training to keep building muscle, and you will burn even more calories.  Way to go! You are doing an amazing job!
