I’ve heard you can only alter a dress down by the maximum of two dress sizes. Anymore than that you will start altering the entire shape of the dress.

I think a lot of it depends on the particular dress, but I would think it would be fine. I’m sooo tiny, but I found a size 4 dress I love.. I’m smaller than a size zero, and they altered it no problem. But I would probably talk to whoever is doing your alterations, just to make sure!

I agree that it depends on the dresss, the overall structure and amount of detail on it.  My dress is a sample, size 12, and they’re altering it to a 4 with no harm to the look of the dress.

2 sizes shouldn’t be a problem. I’ve lost about 5-6 inches and there shouldn’t be a problem. I would suggest arranging a consult with your alterations person which should set your mind at ease and give you a good idea. Btw good job on not ordering 2 sizes too small and trying to fit it.

A size 10 can usually go down to a 6 (2 dress sizes) no problem. Sometimes, they can come in even more. One of my good friends bought a sample (size 12) and took it in to probably a bridal 4 or 6 since she’s a 2/4.
