i went to an interview for a job I really want… the interview went well, but I do know that since I am a new grad I am probably competing with candidates with more experience. At the end of the interview, the interviewer said “incase you are not the successful candidate, there was another job posted with our company today that you may want to consider applying for….that’s not saying you will not be successful, but we thought you might want to know”

Its hard to know. I would think it means they liked you, otherwise they wouldn’t even suggest you apply for another job within their company. But who knows.

Every time I’ve gotten that, meant that they liked somone else for that particular position, but they liked you enough to recommend another position. BUT you never know! Stuff like this is always a crapshoot! Good luck! and definitely apply for the other position as well! Shows them that you’re super interested!

Apply for the other position!

It’s hard to tell. I was asked once if I would mind if my resume was passed to another agency. I said I wouldn’t mind. I ended up getting the job and getting an offer for a position at the other agency.

It sounds like they like you and you’re a good fit for their company.
Jobs are rarely determined by 1 decision maker, so this person was probably letting you know of other opportunities.
Was the first job you applied for a position that required experience? And is the new one more entry-level?
Either way, I think it’s a good sign that they would tell you about other opportunities.

inky_1 +1 Apply for the other job! They were practically begging you to!

They may just think you’d be a great fit for that other job and they are interested in your skills in general, whether it’s for this job or the other one.

I would definitely just apply for the other job, that comment is not necessarily revealing any information. In some cases, they may not yet have interviewed all applicants and don’t have the full picture of who is the best fit.
ETA: My husband actually got his current job from the recommendation of an interviewer for a different job at the same organization!

Definitely apply for the other job! It sounds very promising. Especially if the interviewer liked you enough to tell you about it. Good luck!

Hard to know for sure, but I’ve been in the same position and I did not get the job. I did however get the other job they suggested I apply for. IF you love the company, I say apply for the other job and contact the person you interviewed with to let her know so she can prioritize your application and pass it on to the appropriate department!
