We have our engagement photo session this weekend as part of our wedding package, so we won’t actually be paying her anything at time of service. Are we supposed to tip her after the e-session, or would it be part of whatever tip we give her after the wedding? I’m assuming you tip photographers even if they own their business…

We did our engagement pictures in November. I was wondering the same thing at that time. We didn’t end up tipping because we figured we’d include it in the gratuity the night of our wedding. I’m still wondering if he thinks we stiffed him, I’d hope not, but I think a lot of people just tip the wedding night.

We did not. I didnt even think about it until this! Isnt there some rule about not tipping the proprietor or some such saying?

Actually, we aren’t planning to tip our photographer at all. I hear that if you hire someone who owns their own business, there’s no need to tip since they get all the profit anyway. If they were from a service, then we’d tip because they only get a cut of the profit. Of course, you can tip if you think they went above and beyond.

We hired a photographer but I was blessed to not have to pay extra in our package for engagement pictures, instead my talented brother in law & wife took them!
But if my wedding photographer were to take our engagement pictures too I would not tip her, not because she’s not great, but because she is not part of an agency, she is the business owner therefore all the profit goes to her. My $.02.

Tipping’s rare but nice when it happens 🙂
I agree with angie123, that when it’s a business owner it’s not really expected. However, if you feel like they’ve gone above and beyond that’s nice.

We tipped but mostly because our e-pic photographer is NOT our wedding day photographer. Plus, we knew we were not buying any prints or packages – just all images on disc. Our e-pic photographer was fabulous – not time constraints, no travel fee, no sitting fee, and half the cost of all others in our area due to a great referral. So… we tipped 20% – but again – the cost was a steal and we loved his pictures. We tipped when we picked the CD with images up at his office – not the day of.
