I realize this is an old post, but…

I have heard some people make it a part of the ceremony which I kind of love. After your wedding ring is placed on your finger you have finished exchanging rings, the officiant would say something along the lines of:

The engagement ring is a symbol of a promise and intent. Now that the promise and intent have been fullfilled, GROOM, please place the engagement ring on BRIDE’s finger over her wedding band to symbolize that the love that brought you together will always protect and sustain your marriage.

Just something a little different.

It’s traditional in my background to wear wedding bands on the right hand, so I plan to wear my engagement ring on my left during the ceremony (and afterwards, too) and just add the band to the right.
