You know, my photographers were there for 10 hours, so I can’t complain.  They left at the end of the reception, but in hindsight I do wish they’d stayed a few minutes longer to get our boat exit which we don’t have any good pictures of.  ETA – our ceremony/reception was a total of 5-1/2 hours.

@Zusie:  Unless you have something special planned for your exit, there usually isn’t going to be a huge need to have photographers there much past the first hour of open dancing.  That is unless your really really love dancing photos.

My photographer was there from the moment I was getting ready in the salon and was the last to leave with my husband and me at the end of the night. It was 100% worth it.

Our dancing pics were AMAZING, so i’m really glad our photog stayed till about 20 mins until the end. It was about 9 hours total, and we had getting ready pics, an extended first look session, formal portraits, etc in addition to the ceremony and reception

@continuumphotography:  Well, one of my favorite photos is from the very end of the night, where my husband is holding me in a tight bear hug, with a complete look of contentment/exhaustion on his face.  It was a totally candid moment, but it speaks volumes to me.  My cousin has a nearly identical photo from her wedding that I also love.  In addition to that, I have some wild and crazy dancing photos from later in the evening as people really loosened up, so I can honestly say that it was worth it to have them stay to the end of the night.

We haven’t had our wedding yet… but it seems like we are putting so much effort into lighting and things of that nature, that I want our photographer there so they can capture some of those nightime details for our outdoor reception.  Since we are getting married in June, that means staying almost 1 1/2 hours into the dancing.

@reebee:  Don’t get me wrong, it’s not like we discourage people from hiring their photographers to document more of their day.  Photographically speaking I always advise people that it’s best to have the photographer there documenting the getting ready part more than it is the final moments if for budgetary reasons they need to eliminate hours from their coverage.  You are right that dancing photos don’t get really good until people have loosened up, and typically right at the very end there are usually some great moments to capture.  It just depends on how much people have to budget on longer coverage lengths, and what the individual timeline looks like.  Most of our weddings book us for 8-10 hours.

I of course had to pay extra but it was worth every penny. I love the pictures and our album came out beautifully. Our pictures capture everything from me getting ready to our last dance. I did change and did something special for my last dance, but I have seen a couple of people’s albums who didn’t have their photographer stay to the end and they just seem to end abruptly, like something is missing.
