We posted on the boards about building a chat feature for Weddingbee, and a bunch of people begged us not to…. in case their IT people noticed all the chatting and block Weddingbee!
We hear that a lot from readers – a fear that the IT dep’t will notice them using Weddingbee, and either block the site… or fire the person. *gulp*
Do any of you worry about visiting Weddingbee too much during work hours? Have you ever been contacted about your web usage by your IT department?

I am on it basically all day at work, but my work is so cool, no one has said anything. I hope it stays that way!

I have to say, I think people should be able to be responsible enough at work NOT to be engaging in behavior that will get them in trouble. For example, if a chat room is going to get weddingbee blocked at your work or get you fired, you should have enough personal responsibility not to use the chat feature, or not to sign on to weddingbee. Would chat be built into the site in such a way that all users would be signed in to chat automatically? Maybe I am misunderstanding the concern here? When I was working, I never worried about being caught using any website too much, because I didn’t spend so much time on any website that it would be a problem with my employer…
I actually thought the chat feature would be a good incentive for people to come visit the site during non-work hours, which you’ve said are the non-peak hours.

@amandopolis – I think the concern was that IT would visit the site, see that you could chat, and then block it as a result?

my fiance is the general manager at our company and keeps threatening to block it from our work. He knows it’s in his better interests to keep me happy though so it hasn’t happened yet 🙂

My old workplace had Weddingbee blocked because it fell under the "blog" category. Stupid Webscense!!

I’m online all day at work, and I have Weddingbee open at all times. I just refresh throughout the day. I don’t worry about IT, mostly because I’m friends with our IT gal and she knows I’m not going to do anything crazy. I have admin privledges.

It hasn’t been blocked yet, but a chat feature would def. get WB blocked on all military installations etc. That’s why AIM got blocked!

We’re discouraged from using the Internet for any personal items at work. A quick check of a restaurant’s phone number and menu or something similar is fine, but I’d get in trouble if I used my work computer and Internet connection to access something like Weddingbee on a regular basis.
That’s why smartphones are for. 🙂

I was one of those people, Mr. Bee! My main concern was that the chat feature would change the website so it was blocked by our IT department since chat sites are not allowed under our computer use policy. Currently, we are allowed to use an hour a day of personal time to visit non work related websites. I like to use mine in 5 minute blocks so I get to take more breaks. 🙂 Most websites are allowed, with exception to chat sites, porn, facebook (but Twitter and LinkedIn are ok)etc…
If WB added a chat function, that might change the way it was recognized by our server (so it would come up blocked as a chat site instead of allowed as a blog site). Our IT department uses a system that automatically blocks certain types of sites, without having to manually input each blocked site. I don’t know how it works, really, which is why I thought it might categorize WB as a blocked website if a chat function was added. If it was blocked at work, I just wouldn’t be on here during the day. No big deal.
Oh, and my IT guy knows I am on here every day. In fact, his Fi is on here, too, just not as regularly.

I’m a little scared of the ‘bee being blocked at work. Facebook was blocked about a year ago (I now have special access because I complained and told them i used it for work purposes). I don’t know whether the chat feature was what caused them to block it or whether they just noticed people on the site. I’ve never got called out for reading blogs all day before, but you never know!
