We don’t have kids yet, but my parents already shotgunned straight up “grandma” and “grandpa”.  They figured it would be ok, because DH’s family is from a French area of the country and he calls his grandparents “Mamere” and “Papere”, so our kids could just do the same.

Growing up, I just called my grandparents Grandma/Grandpa Smith, and Grandma/Grandpa Jones.  Who knew there were so many options for nicknames…

My SO’s parents are divorced and his mom remarried, and my parents are divorced and my dad remarried. So my son and daughter call my dad Poppa, my stepmom is Grammy and my mom is Grandma insertnamehere. My SO’s mom is Grandma, his stepdad is Grandpa and his dad is Grampy. But my son is used to confusing names as he has two middlenames and a hyphenated last name!!

My grandparents are Grandma/Grandpa and Gran/Pop, but my younger cousins later changed Grandma/Grandpa to Mimi/Poppop! I was outraged! It’s the job of the first grandchildren to establish the grandparent names!

Also, my mom has said that she wants my future kids to just call her by her first name. She’s no fun!

@kirabee: My youngest cousin did this too.  The first 7 grandkids all called my grandma “grandma Smith”, and the youngest came along and he calls her Nanny.  Pft.  Who the heck is Nanny??

My cousins and I call our grandmother “Mamere”, which I really like. My grandmothers had a number of husbands. The only one I ever associated with on a grandparent level, I called “Papa” but that was like 20 years ago. I called my fathers parents “Grandma” and “Grandpa”. Fiance calls his grandparents “Grammy” and “Papa”.

FI’s step brothers have kids so his parents go by “Mimi” and “Pa”. When we have kids, my parents will be “Gigi” and “Pops”. There will be no “grandma” and “grandpa”. I dont know why, but for some reason I just dont like the names.

We always called both sets of grandparents “Grandma/Grandpa” growing up. However, my mom did not want to be confused with my dad’s mom by being called “Grandma T.” so my nephews call her “Mamaw” and my dad “Pawpaw” (or however you spell it). Our baby will do the same, but mostly call DH’s parents “Grandma/Grandpa” because that is what DH’s nephew calls them.

Growing up, I called my dad’s parents Farmor and Farfar (Swedish) and my mom’s parents Poppa and Grandma.

Our future children will call my father Morfar. My mother passed away three years ago, so I guess in referring to her I’ll call here Mormor.

I don’t know what my Fiance wants our future children to call his mom.

I read a Dear Margo column about this a couple days ago. Her advice to a stressed out mom-to-be was that the babies would choose names themselves 🙂 I thought that was really cute and very true in my family.

My maternal grandparents were divorced and remarried. They were Grandma firstname and Grandpa firstname. Their new spouses were Papa firstname and Miss firstname.

My paternal grandparents passed when I was quite young but I recall calling my grandfather ‘Grandpa hislastname’.

Ideally, I want our kids to call my parents Grandma and Grandpa. FI’s parents are Grandma and Grandpa to his nieces and nephew, so I think that’s what our kids will call them also.

I call my dad’s parents Grandma/Grandpa and my mom’s parents Nonnie/Nonno (they are Italian and don’t speak a lick of English)… We haven’t decided what our kids will call our parents, but I’d love it if they called my parents Nonnie and Nonno too. 🙂

My mother’s parents were Narnees and Wati.

To my kids, their father’s parents were Ra and Poppy.

Mine were Nanny and Poppa, and Nana and Poppy. Fiance has Grandma (insert name here).

Our daughter picked the names for my parents herself: Grawma and Papoo. Where she got these I have no idea, but my parents love it. She calls FI’s mom Grandma Eva, nothing too fun there.

My nephews call my dad Opa (German), and my mom Grandma Firstname. They call my BIL’s parents Grandma Firstname…. I can’t remember what they call my BIL’s father, whoops!

I call my grandfather Poppa, my grandmother Granny, and my other grandmother Granny Buffy because she always had a cat named Buffy, LOL! I swear there must have been 4 Buffy’s in my lifetime! Lord only knows why she never picked another  name….
