Try to “get involved” in your neighbors lives?
FH and I live in a townhouse. The walls are mainly exposed brick, but the front of the house seems to be finished drywall. So, from our living room we can hear every detail happening in the neighbors kitchen. From our bathroom, we can hear into the office of the neighbor on the other side.
I know it’s terrible, but we are always trying to figure them out! The both work from home, so we never see them, but we pick up strange bits and pieces of their lives through the walls. We’ve come up with some pretty far out stories for previous tenants, some ended up actually being dead on (the legit hooker next door!)
Do any of the other apartment dwellers do this, or are we just inexcusably nosy?
Update: I’m not saying we spend every moment of our day spying or anything. But for instance, the guy next door lives alone and never, ever has any visitors. Today however, I’ve been unfortunately stuck in the bathroom for many hours, and I can hear he has a male visitor. They are making nervous small talk, with alot of awkward, nervous giggling. Im just trying to figure it out! Is he a date, and old friend catching up, who is he? FH and I have very active imaginations and neighbors let us feed that outlet 🙂

So long as you don’t say anything to them or spread gossip, I think it’s normal to watch your neighbors. Just remember that if you can see them, they can probably see you too.

Nope! I am way too anti-social to be concerned about neighbors or what they are up to. In fact I am pushing for privacy fencing because I don’t even want to see my neighbors.
Now we no longer live in apartments. It used to be WE were the neighbors everyone seemed interested in. It’s probably the reason why I dislike neighbors so.

We used to live in a house that was converted into two apartments…we lived upstairs. The guy downstairs seemed to be out a lot. But every few months he’d have like a crazy techno dance party and a bunch of guys singing karoake or something. It was bizzare!

I’m a nosy nelly! I’ll admit it!

When I lived in an apartment I was nosy too. I never talked to my neighbors (or anyone in the apartments) but I would get pieces here and there of conversations and always wished I could hear more.

Our neighbour is a DJ and we know that because we had to deal with months on end of his bass before the condo board actually did something about it. Our upstairs neighbour is a skinny kid that walks like an elephant, and our downstairs neighbours have a toddler. That’s about it 😉

I was like this when we lived in a building in a very ‘trendy’ neighbourhood, it was all nice studio apartments so a lot of older single people and a few gay couples – all really fun people and funny stories… like the guy who got locked out of his apartment so went doorknocking to see if he could climb across to his place from another balcony. the girl next door wasn’t answering her door so he assumed she wasn’t home and knocked on our door. so he’s climbing from our balcony, across her balcony to his place (with us watching of course because as if you wouldn’t!) and sees that she is indeed home and hadn’t answered the door because she never answers the door if she’s not expecting someone. so if she’s nervous about unexpected visitors, imagine how she reacted to a man climbing along her balcony rail!
there was also the guys across the hall from us who bought a jacuzzi for their balcony, and spent most of the day getting it up the stairs and helping other people climb over it if they wanted to get past. then they had to detach their door and unpack the jacuzzi in the hallway to get it into their apartment.
then in our next building we lived across from a couple where the guy was a horribly abusive alcoholic and it made me wish every day that we didn’t know anything about them… but we could hear everything and see a lot as well. we called the police to their place a few times and I’m sure he knew it was us, so it made me a bit nervous whenever I saw him at the shops!
now all I know about our current neighbour is that he/she smokes pot on their balcony every evening. and it stinks up our place.
