@Nola: If you are looking in your local area, the information should be available on your county clerk’s site.

I don’t have to. It’s my mom’s favorite thing to do, so she is always telling me.

I didn’t really look up people directly but when looking at houses I looked at prices in a lot of different areas so kinda could gauge how much people paid.  Honestly, I was floored by what some of the developments cost.  They were selling ‘fancy’ duplexes for $400g in rural PA.  This was before the housing crisis, so somehow they sold, but I was just thinking there is no way you are ever going to make money on that house, it’s using crap materials and you have to share a wall with someone.

I’ve never done this and never knew you could! I probably wouldn’t though, I really could care less.

@guitargirl: Your friend sounds a bit snotty but I will say this from someone who built. We built our dream house (and I proudly say it) but we paid out of pocket for a lot of things and our loan is much lower than what our house was just appraised for and is worth much more.

In my county, you can look up just about anything about someone through the county clerk’s office or property appraiser’s website. It’s actually kind of creepy how you can just pull up scanned images of someone’s mortgage or divorce online. Or check out the layout and exactly what amenities are in someone’s house.

I like doing it anyway. 🙂

I just looked at that Zillow website it seems to be the price that the town appraises the houses for because my house is listed for $50k more then I paid for it.
