I’ve just learned to take half home. That way you get two meals for the price of one. I think a lot of people like to find others to “blame” for weight issues, etc. but it really is a lot about personal responsibility.

People need to be better educated about nutrition and what they are putting in their mouths. It is not a restaurant’s job to enforce “healthy” portion sizes.

The other thing I do, if I don’t feel like taking half home. Is just order an appetizer as my entree. Usually those are the size of “normal” entrees.

It bothers me, especially when I go out with other people. For instance, if we go out with the Future In-Laws, they’re often nice enough to treat us. But then Future Mother-In-Law gets upset, because I eat only about 1/2 of my meal.

I feel like more places should offer reasonable 1/2 orders. The only places that seem to are those whose normal orders are bigger than average anyway.

I always split my food in half the moment I get it. That way, my limits are visual and I don’t over eat. Plus, I have lunch the next day!

@KatNYC2011:  Ditto everything you just said.

I see no reason to complain about basically getting two meals for the price of one.  Just because the restaurant gives you a huge portion that doesn’t mean you have to eat it.  When trying to lose weight you should have the self control to stop eating when you’re full, without having the restaurant portion it out for you.

I am on the “lunch for the next day” boat! I think it’s a great perk 🙂 You just have to be personally responsible for how much you eat in one sitting.

I normally only eat 1/2 or less than 1/2 and take the rest home. I LOVE leftovers!

I also agree with @KatNYC2011: about its not a restaurants job to teach people how to eat, it is up to the person who is eating.

To help with overindulging, I usually go ahead and ask them to box up half of the meal before bringing me my plate.  That way I am not even tempted! 🙂

I actually feel like a lot of the places I go don’t have big enough portions… I’m guessing it’s partly specific to the places I go.  National chain restaurants tend to have huge portions, but at least half the time when I go out around here (silicon valley area), I’m still hungry after I eat my meal. I do have a much larger than average appetite, though.

@PumpkinSpiceChai: If I don’t want to eat it the second day I still take it with me. Living in NYC I usually will see someone on the street who is begging and will offer the food to them.

If I don’t see anyone to give it to, my Fiance will usually eat it the next day. Also, I tend to stay away from the “huge portion” restaurants if I don’t feel like taking food home, or I’ll just order a smaller appetizer rather than a full meal if I know it’s going to be something I don’t want to have a second time and Fiance won’t eat it.

@PumpkinSpiceChai: Usually I’ll get a taker. Mostly from those sleeping on the subway stairs or when there are multiple people with pets. And if I don’t get any takers then it’ll either go in the fridge for Fiance (or one of his friends) or I’ll toss it. I’m not a fan of wasting food, but I also am not going to eat something I shouldn’t just so it doesn’t go to waste.

I don’t go to big chain restaurants very often though so usually the portion sizes are smaller or my Fiance finishes whatever I don’t before we leave the restaurant.

I always split restaurant meals in half, but sometimes I still can’t even eat half and I’m always so full afterwards :P. I’m considering doing it in threes, lol.

I went to Burger King the other day…. shhhhhh don’t tell Miss Coffee! I asked the employee to only fill my HUGE cup half way… as I would NEVER drink all of it.

She returned with it filled to brim!
