Me and my boyfriend were talking about engagement stories and I’m sooo glad he thinks big showy ones are tacky. I don’t need an expensive trip, a choreographed dance, a banner at a stadium…. I just want him, a bent knee and a few sweet words 🙂

We were on the beach and he proposed with a wooden ring.

yup. He came to my work and was waiting there and surprised me (he lives 3 hours away) when I arrived and just asked me right there. (ok, so I work in a church and we were all alone and it was beautiful, but still…) 🙂

We were carving pumpkins for Halloween, and when we were done he put a candle in his and turned off the lights and brought me over to it…he had carved ‘Marry Me?’ into the pumpkin! It was super cute.

He proposed on Thursday January 6th – no significance to the date 🙂 We were on a cruise and had just spent a long day drinking and walking around in the sunshine in Cozumel. He proposed during dessert at dinner. I had NO clue he was going to propose, not even when the champagne was delivered and everyone started watching us. No idea. The man was so calm throughout the whole trip and during dinner! Turns out the poor guy had tried to propose two nights before at dinner but I was so sea sick I went back to the room.
Also like to add that the airline lost his luggage so all he had was what he was wearing on the plane, a spare pair of shoes, and a diamond ring. ha

Ours was simple.
We have lived together for 3 years. I know him inside and out. There is no possible way he could plan something elaborate and surprise me. It would be simply impossible because I know him too well.
I had just gotten home from a cheerleading competition the day before. I was still so tired from the 10 hour drive home and all the practicing. He made dinner and was just being sweet like he always is. I didnt suspect a thing.
I always get a shower around 9pm. I got in the shower and when I got out he was in the living room all dressed up and down on one knee. He had a matching sweater for our beloved dog. He had this whole speech I could tell he practiced telling me how much he cared about me, how we are perfect together, and how he wants me to be the person he makes a family with and grows old with. By this time I was bawling. He asked “Will you Marry me” and I said yes and sat down on his knee and we cried and kissed. Our dog kissed us too! It was so adorable and a very happy moment.
I am not usually a crier and everything he said is stuff I hear often. He is very sweet to me. I think what sent me over the edge was having our dog all dressed up and just seeing him for the first time as the person I really am going to wake up next to every single morning for the rest of my life. That is a good feeling and not something that is easily described.
I think simple proposals are the best. He knew I didnt need more than that. I know he would do anything in the world and spend any amount of money to propose but we just arent those type of people. I would have hated for it to be in public too because I would have held back emotion.

Love this thread!
Our story is so us!
He got the ring although I only had a sneaking suspicion as I had heard him and his mother and sister cooing and giggling like fools in his mothers bedroom a few days before.
We went bowling with some friends and then his family plied me with champagne (should have been a red flag seeing as they never drink it, but it was the xmas season). I was arguing politics with FIs Brother-In-Law when Fiance shouted for me to come to the basement.
I was like “Why?!!!” Not moving, continuing my conversation.
Fiance “Come downstairs!!!”
Fiance “I need some help with something”
me “urgh fine”
LOL!! I was so into the conversation and the champagne!
So I bounded down the stairs and there he was all nervous and on one knee!!!! Took me a moment to realise what the heck was going on!!
Then he asked me to marry him and I was so excited and shouting yes of course that I didn’t even look at the ring. Its gorgeous btw 😛
He had wanted to propose out in the snow, but then he was afraid he would loose the ring in the snow so he decided it was safer inside. Which knowing me and my hyperness was probably the best idea.
I love that our story is cute and chilled out. Thats us calm and chilled and happy. No over the top gestures needed here. 🙂

Its great to hear that not everyone has an over the top engagement – because I know I definintely didn’t! All of the engagement stories I’d heard before had been from my sorority sisters and they always seemed to walk into houses utterly covered in rose petals with candles all over or get tricked into meeting their honey who flew in from out of town, at the scenic overlook outside of town, etc etc.
My fiance proposed to me while we were at my little brother’s Military Academy Christmas Ball. We were dressed up really nice and had a great dinner, and my family was around, but it wasn’t anything ridiculous – he just asked if we could go outside the hotel and talk a little while and then got down on one knee as we were about to go back in and dance. We’d been having a conversation about something stupid like going on diets for our New Year’s resolution and I remember I didn’t think he was really listening/participating in the conversation (NO WONDER HE WASN’T!)…
I’d really hoped for him to propose somewhat dramatically – quiet our room of friends at our New Year’s Eve party the next night and do it in front of everyone or something like that, but I should’ve realized that that’s just not how he does things. Though it wasn’t what I was expecting, and isn’t this elaborate story I’m happy how things went down and its nice to hear some your guys’ stories that also aren’t over the top.
