I’m not sure if the colour scheme thing is a relatively new trend, but I can honestly say I’ve never noticed it at weddings I’ve been to in the past. It was a bit of a surprise when I started wedding planning and all the guides said the first thing to do was pick a colour scheme or a theme! Everyone else on the Bee seems so concerned with colours all matching, so I’m just wondering…
Does anyone else not have specific colours or a theme for their wedding?

We’re eloping and I still get asked if we have colors. Nope. I know even if we were having a proper wedding we still wouldn’t have a theme. I’m not a big theme person.

I definitely don’t think you need a theme. But I also don’t think color schemes are a new thing at all.

@kes18: Yeah, I’m sure it’s not a new idea, but it seems to be one of those things at weddings that no one really notices unless it’s a really obvious colour scheme (i.e.
everything is in those colours). But I never wanted one, never saw the point of it (who’s going to notice, anyway) and just figured I’d go without.
@SimpleGifts: Glad to hear I’m not the only one! As far as I’m concerned, my colour scheme is “cheap” and “mashine washable.”

You’re going to need to coordinate your colors, but that doesn’t mean you have to be super planned about it. The colors of your Bridesmaid or Best Man dresses, for example, will influence the colors your florist would recommend for your flowers.
Your theme can always be: WEDDING!

I didn’t. IMO it looks like prom. Our venue had so much character on it’s own so there wasn’t a lot to do that needed a bunch of matchy embellishments.

@Ellegee: Exactly! My wedding’s in a beautiful garden with heaps of character of its own. I don’t feel that I need to add to it (besides, coordinating with
all the flowers and plants that will be there would be a nightmare!).
@mrsSonthebeach: Haha, that’s exactly what I say if anyone asks what the theme is. “Um…we’re getting married?”

@LadyElva: You definitely don’t need a color scheme either if you don’t want one! Generally I tend to think it centers around whatever color of Bridesmaid or Best Man dresses people have (and I would assume that was what their colors were if I was a guest). But if you don’t have Bridesmaid or Best Man you might not have one at all!

Oh and I do have a lovebird theme but the only reason I have a theme is because our nickname for each other is “birdie” so I just had to do it. But it’s not too over the top, just some touches here and there. Otherwise I probably wouldn’t have had one either

@kes18: Yeah, I definitely intend to have the bouquets coordinated with the Bridesmaid or Best Man dresses, but as far as that matching the cake, invitations, table cloths, napkins, decorations… Too much of a headache for me! I applaud anyone that’s got the ability to do that much and who has that much attention to detail with their wedding, but I most definitely don’t have the time or inclination for it!
I like the sound of your theme! Haha, mine and fiance’s nickname for each other is “midget” so I can just imagine all the PC ramifications of including that in the decor

@LadyElva: I’m having invitations with some birds on them, I have two bird cake toppers, and I’m doing branch centerpieces with some little wooden birds I think I might put on some branches, a birdcage card holder, and I want to do some paper cut-out bird backround for the ceremony. I enjoy wedding planning and sometimes we get down-time days at work so I find the time to plan and browse online on the job! I can’t go overboard on theme and there will be no pastels because it’s in a distillery…definitely not a garden wedding!
Midget would be a very interesting theme!!! haha!

I agree that it looks like prom. i’ve never been a fan of wedding colors. We are getting married in a garden so I’m not going to have colors just for the sake of having colors. I’m probably going to have my maids wear lavender but thats it.

@LadyElva: I don’t think choosing wedding colors is a new concept, but I tend to think that choosing a theme is. I had actually never heard of choosing a theme until I signed up for WeddingBee.
We haven’t officially decided on our color scheme (though we’re still in the very early stages of planning), but we’ll probably come up with something. I don’t really want everything to be super matchy-matchy, but I like the idea of having a somewhat cohesive look for the wedding party, venue, etc.
As for a theme, I doubt we’ll have one. We’ve been talking about just putting in a bunch of seemingly random things that are very “us” … I think that’s probably what we’ll end up doing.

We’re not having a theme either – each to their own, but I think they’re kind of goofy. We’re super outdoorsy, fun-loving people and live in the boonies (Wyoming) so we’ll have decorations and activities that are just things we like. Wildflowers, mason jars cause my parents have a gazillion from canning, corn hole cause that’s all we do at summer parties, nature-y stuff like a tree guestbook and sliced wood cakestand and flowers in my hair, etc. (I have wanted all these things for years before they became all Pinteresty popular, but that’s another whole story!)

@LadyElva: “cheap” and “machine washable” love it! 🙂
