I am so on the fence about this because, on one hand, it’s poor etiquette, but on the other hand, I want to invite these people if there’s space.  My guest limit is 170, and I have 201 on my guest list.  I want to invite everyone and not offend everyone, so I have no idea what to do.

I’m really interested in other opinions on this too!

I would absolutely never do this.

We B listed. However, we sent the A list invites out early enough that we were able to send out our B list invites with over a month to spare to the reply date on our cards. And none of our B listers seem to have been offended, at least not that we know of/can tell–we’re getting lots of accepts from them.

I think with a wedding in March, it’s too late to do a B list, but you can invite all 236since they can fit if necessary and chances are 20% or so won’t come.

Yes mam we do! I’m paying for 50 slots, even if they are not there so we have two batches of invites with a B-list awaiting.

I started out with a B list, but people aren’t replying quickly enough so I went ahead and invited them. There are about 20 extra people I have to invite, but I’m able to make space by having a second, adjacent room for a children’s buffet.

We are not doing a B list.  We painstakingly searched for a venue that will hold our entire guest list as well as fit our budget.  Not an easy task, and unfortunately, not an option for everyone.  I know Abbie had a thread earlier about her conundrum.  As a rule, I would plan and budget for 100% acceptance just in case.  I think I would concede a B list only if there are clear cut-off lines, such as family, then friends, then acquaintances, then coworkers, etc…

@ilyesq:  I agree with PP. If your wedding is next month invites should be out already.  It’s too late for a b list.

We have an A list and a B list…since our families are so so so huge, we’re planning for 300 guests…we’re inviting all the A listers, (blood relatives, and about 6-10 friends we can’t wed without) and then as we get RSVPs we’ll send out B list invites in order of importance or whatever…We couldn’t find a venue to accomodate everyone that we were happy with/fit our needs….so 300 is the cut off…but we’ll see what happens!

I think a B list is risky. It’s very poor form–what if some of the people on your B list find out about the invitations being sent out long before they receive one? Just invite who you truly want to invite, and if you end up being under 200, at least you will be surrounded by people you genuinely want to celebrate with….not just bodies to fill the space lol.

We have a b-list.  We just couldn’t afford to invite everyone we wanted to.  But our first rsvp deadline is next week, so after that we can see if we get to send out a second round of invites and we’ll still have 4-6 weeks until the wedding.

I hate B lists.  If your venue can hold 240 and space is the only issue, inviting 236 should be about right with declines.

We sent out save the dates to get a feel from our out of town guest.  We’ve gotten a few response from our friends that won’t be able to make it, so we will invite about 10 to 15 more with our invites.
