I was considering eloping in the Riviera Maya (Playa del Carmen) during and upcoming trip. However, there seems to be quite a few rules for getting married in Mexico that made it seem like a huge PITA, unfortunately.

From my research, it appears that you have to get an official certified copy of your birth certificates translated to Spanish. You must get blood tests and chest xrays done in Mexico by a Mexican doctor (but you have to be there for a few days prior to getting this done), and your divorce decree (if previously married) must be 300 days old. That’s where I ran into problems. While I’ve been separated for 2 years, it’s taken that long to finalize my divorce. So my decree is technically only a few months old.

However, there you can have a “religious” ceremony done in Mexico (which isn’t considered legal unless also a civil ceremony, if I remember correctly).

I hope it works out for your friend. I think it would be extremely wonderful to elope there!
