@MrsPanda99:  We are going to the mexican riviera for our honeymoon! We are staying at the Secrets Maroma Resort. It’s an all inclusive adult resort. It looks amazing and the beach is supposed to be one of the best!

I have never been to mexico, so I am wondering the same thing about safety..I want to know too, so I’m going to follow this thread 🙂

my parents and my brother (FI and i are undecided) are going to cancun in january for a wedding. they’re staying here: http://www.palaceresorts.com/beachpalace/default-en.html i think it’s costing them like, $3500 for the two of them, for 5 days all inclusive with airfare.

We went in January for my husband’s birthday. I’ve also been once before. We stayed in Cancun & I recommend the Palace hotels. If you stay on the local strip you won’t have any problems at all.

I know tons of people who still go to Mexico, but my husband and I will not go back.  We have both been once in our teens, and we have no desire to return.  There are too many other places to see in this world, than to go back to Mexico.  I would not feel comfortable being there at this point in time, and I travel extensively so I’m not naive about traveling either.  I understand that bad things can happen ANYWHERE, but I’d rather just stay away.

If you’re interested in other decently priced locales however, let me know!

ETA: My mom and sister were there a couple years ago, and had a scary experience in a taxi…he started leading them away from their hotel, and my mom said something to him…he got back on track, but I have no idea if this was nothing or if he was actually going to do something sketchy…

@MrsPanda99:  Riviera Maya Barcelo Resorts.  The place is absolutely wonderful and pretty damn good budget wise.  It was all-inclusive so you didn’t have to worry about anything, unless you wanted to pick up some souvenirs.

If you decide to leave the resort for any reason, they take your name, where you’re going, and who you’re going with, and are suppsoed to start calling in people if for some reason you’re not back on time.

We even went to some more touristy rural areas that were perfectly fine.  We went on an excursion though- mostly because we didn’t know where to go, haha.  It was a very humbling experience to see how rural Mexico was, but at no point did I feel threatened.

@MrsPanda99:  We went to Isla Mujeres.  I’ve also been to Cancun, Riviera Maya and Cozumel.  Riviera Maya is awesome, cancun is okay – crowded and party city, Cozumel was there for a cruise stop and it’s not the greatest.

ETA – Secrets resorts are awesome.

@MrsPanda99:  We go to Puerto Vallarta or Riviera Nayarit almost every year. We have never had a problem. We spend most of our time at the resort but do venture out to nearby towns also.

@MrsPanda99: I went to Mexico and LOVED it, but seeing as though you’re from Canada, you should seriously consder going to Cuba. Havana is incredible, and definitely not to be missed. A lot of people say the food is bland (true), but if you go to a five-star, they have amazing a la carte restaurants.

My husband and I went a few years ago and stayed at a brand new resort in Varadero. It was only a 3-star, so the food was pretty bland, and the staff was brand new, so everything seemed kind of disorganized. But work paid for it, so I didn’t complain. My sister went to the Iberostar Varadero, which is the #1 rated resort in Varadero, and said it was amazing. The beaches in Varadero are amazing, regardless of the resort. Just make sure to bring your own condiments if you like sauces, like I do!

@MrsPanda99: Who doesn’t want to return to Cuba?!?!?! I loved it there!

Taking all of that into consideration, I went to Cancun when I was in Mexico, but that was some time ago. I do remember the food was amazing and the mixed drinks were really great. Not sure I would go back to Cancun though. I think it would make me feel really old now.

Have a great time on your trip! 🙂
