@okqueenbee:  I don’t… yet! I just made a decision to go back and get one about a year ago so I can advance further in my field. 🙂

@Overjoyed:  +1000. I went to college out of high school and dropped out. I have worked for 7 years and now have a specific field that I know I need to pursue my degree in.

@okqueenbee:

Nope. A few attempts and no issues funding it, but never finished.

@okqueenbee:  I do but I dropped out for a year and had to force myself to re-enroll. I work with many people that dont have degrees and I dont see it as an issue. If you are happy and can afford your expenses you dont need a degree. I know plenty of people that regret their degree for varying reasons. If I wouldve know of my field earlier I probably would had skipped college all together, an education doesnt equal experience in all fields these days or the degrees dont transfer well into the real world applications.

@Aquaria:  I completely agree. Sometimes I curious how they manage this. I have seen a few friends try to have it all but they end up in the worst places financially.

I finished, but it wasn’t easy. I had to take a lot of loans out, because it was completely impossible to hold any kind of real job (besides work study) when my degree took 196 credit hours to finish :/ Kind of wish I would’ve gone to a different school so I wouldn’t be in as much debt, but I’m really happy with how my career is turning out.. so I try to justify it.

I have an undergrad degree, now I’m in grad school and I’m planning a wedding. I also work – but I go to school part time (taking an online track) and I work part time which equates to one full time schedule in my case. Grad school will advance my career which is why I chose to continue my education and I also love school…more so than work (I’m weird). But I feel now a days networks trumps education in most fields so don’t even feel bad about it! Just be wary of pretentious/judgemental people.

@okqueenbee:  I have my bachelors in International Affairs and my minor/focus was Russian.

Guess what I do with that?

Sit at the front desk of our office and answer the phones…support our executives…and that’s it.  The most worthwhile thing is that at least I’m in a federal government office and that’s SORT OF related to my degree?

Don’t get me wrong, I’m glad I got it because in this area (DC) you can’t even get a job like this without a bachelor’s but really, it’s just a box to check off.  Doesn’t feel worth it sometimes.

@abbie017:  And I second this!  I’m six figures in student loan debt, and that makes it feel not worth it sometimes.

Every month when I pay my insane loans I have to stop and breathe and say “this was worth it….this was worth it…” haha!

I don’t…I went to 3 different colleges because I had no idea what I wanted to major in. I ended up not graduating from any of them…but I did complete 2 certificate programs. I now have been working for the same company for 10 years…where I work now has nothing to do with what I went to school for lol..I manage the office of a pest control company…go figure.

I have a Master’s Degree and so does Fiance, we both work in our chosen field. I will say that technically my degree doesn’t earn me more money in my current job, but it did get me my current job. A lot of people asked over the years if I’d go back for my PhD to which I say no since it would not earn me more money or a higher ranking position where I currently am and I have no plans to leave.

I do know a lot of people who have Psych degrees and do not work in that field. Most were “pre-health” majors, pre-dental, pre-vet, etc…A few started out as Biology majors but dropped down to Psych because they could get all their requirements in with overall what was to them an easier degree. That said, a lot of those people ended up not taking their careers further and did not get into dental/vet/medical school. So a lot of them now work as dental assistants, vet techs etc…which they could have done with on the job training or a 1-2 year technical school program. Of course that’s not true about everyone, just a lot of people I know personally.

I’m in DC too and yep I agree, mostly every job that pays somewhat well wants someone with a bachelors, doesn’t really matter in what as long as you have that piece of paper. Same thing in NYC, which is why I went back to finish my undergrad, when I was living there I couldn’t even get an interview for a receptionist job without at least stating that I was enrolled and in the process of receiving my degree.
