Preface: Fiance and I are both hardcore fun people. We love love love to dance. So when my mom told me I needed to spend the reception going around to tables and speaking to our 280ish guests, I was not too pleased.
Fiance and I have discussed doing a “first look,” but he originally hated the idea. However, when he realized that it might free up our cocktail hour so that we can spend that time speaking with guests (we’re not doing a receiving line because our ceremony and reception are in the same location), he warmed up to the idea a bit. Those of you that are doing a first look, why are you doing it? And those of you that have done it, what were your motivations? Did it give you more time to actually enjoy and experience your wedding?

Absolutely it saves time during the wedding!! You get all your pictures done with each other and with family, and you get to enjoy your cocktail hour instead of being whisked away! You can use that time to visit all your guests, and then dance away.
Also, practicality aside, it was my favorite moment of the whole day!

We actually skipped a cocktail hour, but we arrived at the reception approximately 20 minutes after our guests, because we did ALL of our photos ahead of time.
If you’re not into going table to table, consider a receiving line – they can be kind of hellish, but it DOES give you face time with every single guest, eliminating the need for table visits.

Yep! I am so so so glad that we did our first look. The only thing that stressed me out on the day of my wedding was when we were doing family photos after the ceremony and it was taking too long and i just wanted to get to the cocktail hour so we could shmooze and be done with it (so we could get to dance just like you!). I was SO glad that all we had to do were the family pics and not try to rush through ours as well.

Yes. We did it and it was one of the most special moments of our wedding! Also had beautiful pictures and made us much less nervous before the ceremony. We got most of our pictures done before the ceremony too, so we could go straight to the reception.

we are doing a first look to have more time for photos and so we can get all the greeting done ahead of time and be able to dance at our reception. We are going to do a recieveing line with just the two of us at the cocktail hour to be sure we greet everyone, and since its during the cocktail hour guests can mingle while waiting to see us. I hate recieving lines but i doubt we will get to speak to everyone during the cocktail hour if we just try to mingle, so i figure a recieveing line will move a lot faster especially without the bridal party or parents in it.

@mzlouis2b: Ooooh, I like the idea of a receiving line during cocktail hour.
