I picked out a ring a few months ago. We are finally getting closer to placing the order but (of course) I’ve been second guessing my choice. I decided on a cushion halo that includes a diamond basket setting.
Question is-should I put that money towards the center stone instead? Does the profile view of the setting matter? I may be over thinking it but I can’t help but wonder. I love the diamond basket and it was the initial reason I chose the setting, but the center stone size also matters to me as well. Thoughts?

If you think later on down the road the size of the center stone may bother you, I say go for the bigger center stone then upgrade the setting later on!

I personally would go with the bigger centre stone!

Ditto on the center stone!

Well Im picky about settings but if there’s a sizable difference then I might want to get a bigger center stone.
Do you have an image or specifics you could tell us. Like a pic of the basket setting and carats vs what the other setting would look like with a bigger stone?

For the rare time you will look at your ring sideways, it is not worth it to have pretty details if it is preventing you from getting the right centre stone! I would vote for a larger centre stone.
My original ring had awesome details under that nobody really got to see.

Invest in the center stone, you can change settings easily

If it has to be one or the other than DEFINITELY the center stone!!! A nice rock on the thinnest, daintiest, most simple band will still look amazing.

I’m kind of on the fence about this because I really love the Tacori baskets but also love emerald cuts. I’ve seen an emerald cut on those Tacori baskets and I really did not like it. If it came down to it, I’d select my preference for the center stone cut and size instead of the profile detail.
A pretty profile is a nice bonus but not a must have. My ring profile is really plain but I looooove the emerald cut and details on the face.

Here is the designer stock image.
Option 1: To keep this setting as-is, I’d go with a center stone around 1.2 carats and the band is a little over half a carat.
Option 2: Same setting, remove diamonds on the profile and a center stone over 1.5 carats.

@eam003: So you would still have the pave showing on the front but none of those side diamonds on the profile correct?
This is a tough choice but you would still basically be getting the same ring. I would put it like this. Would you rather have a 1.5 carat center stone that people will see or a 1.2 carat center stone with diamonds that mostly only you will see?
I like those side diamonds and think the settng would look prettier with them but I’m assuming here that they are on both side of the basket as well? To be practical I’d say skip them because those small diamonds that sit close to your finger will get in the way of any wedding band you end up choosing (if you are also getting a wedding band). Also they would be there solely for your enjoyment really. So if you really wanted this as a detail on your ring keep it, if it doesn’t matter that much to you I would say get the bigger center stone.
If it is an option I would remove the diamonds that would rest close to your finger and keep the ones on the basket.
For practicality though chances are you’d hit in on something and one of those diamonds would come flying off or crack. You could possibily start another thread asking bees if they have a similar ring with or with out diamonds and see what they say and if they have any advice for you about how their rings are for them in their daily lives.

Well, there are more details – I left them out so it wasn’t too confusing!
I plan on removing the stones on each side of the profile of the band (peek-a-boo diamonds) since they would be covered by weddings bands.
I was trying to decide on removing all diamonds on the basket and the bottom halo. The only pave diamonds that would stay are the diamonds on the main halo and band (from top view).
I initially decided on this ring because all other rings that I found with a plain setting or no basket looked too plain for my taste.
Since I’m customizing the ring so much and I’ve never tried on a 1.2 carat halo on my hand (size 5.25) I’m not sure what it would looke like. I’ve visited the stock ring in the store about 5 times and never second guess it when I see it. Browsing the boards and pricescope have had me thinking. I lean towards keeping the profile diamonds – I think I’m just second guessing myself since I’ve waited so long!
I appreciate everyone’s help, thanks again!

Oh, looking at the boards makes everyone second guess! It seems you may be just as picky as I! I didn’t like any modern settings either and luckily was given one I loved!
I would say stick with the side diamonds then. I honestly think it would look a lot prettier with it than without it. And theres not that much of a difference between 1.2 and 1.5 in my mind anyway. Best of luck to you. 🙂
