Hi ladies,
I am attending a black tie optional wedding tomorrow, and I have a dress that I love and want to wear, but it is a more glam and a lot more va-va-voom than my usual style so I’m a little nervous!! Here is a photo of the dress.

It is long in the back and a bit shorter in the front.
Do you think this works for the event? My husband does not own a tuxedo so he will be wearing a grey suit. Don’t know if that makes a difference.
Thank you so much for your help!!!

soon2bmrsb2016: I love this dress, and I think you have a beautiful figure! But when I think wedding, especially in the winter months, I think something a bit more coverage. Perhaps adding a shaw or something? This dress kind of reminds me of a prom, but with a little jacket or maybe a dress with sleeves would look lovely! I think it’s beautiful especially the color

If I were invited to a black tie optional wedding I would wear my typical wedding fare…a nice cocktail dress. Black tie optional is not a thing and leads me to believe that the couple only cares about making sure their guests are dressed fancy enough for their liking.
Do you know anyone else going to this event? If so, I would ask them what they are thinking of wearing. But if I were you I would ignore the silly dress code and wear something that you feel comfortable in. If that means it is this dress, I would get yourself a nice shawl for some coverage.

Sorry, Bee – I don’t think I’d wear that to a wedding, black tie optional or otherwise. It reads kinda… prom? to me.

justinsgirl2016: Oh dear it looks a little prom because it actually is my prom dress!! Haha! Okay so now I’m thinking definitely no for this dress. So glad I have the bees to help me! Thank you so much for your sweet comments.
I think I might go buy this one. Much more my style, and I know I’ll be able to get a lot of use out of it

Personally, I think its the material that makes it a little too formal. Thats more of a dress for a gala type event or a black tie required wedding. I think its beautiful though. That color looks great on you!

soon2bmrsb2016: I love that little black dress! I’m in the market to find a dress for tomorrow and I see some online that I like, but no chance it will be here for tomorrow! I’m also looking at like “long sleeve cocktail dresses” so I can wear it both to the xmas party and a winter wedding coming up. I really like the black one from white house!

I work in events and Black Tie Optional shows up all the time. It means the men can wear a tux if they own one, but a nice suit is sufficient.
I think the dress would work, but it’s not my style. A bit too prom-like for me. I would wear the White House Black Market dress with sparkly heels and some amazing jewelry.

I agree a little prom-y
The black one you posted is very classsy!
Maybe a little more appropriate and better suited for a wedding

Thanks, Bees! I think I am going to go with the WHBM dress and jazz it up a bit with accessories!

The black one is perfect! I love it. Cocktail dresses have by far been the norm at all of the black tie optional weddings we have attended.

The blue dress might work if it was shortened. The only time I’ve worn long to black-tie optional was when it was a fairly simple black dress, and I jazzed it up with shoes, purse, jewelry and wrap.
