Art deco is a primarily 1920s style, focused on geometric design and patterns with high contrast colors.  1950s (I assume you’re not going for the rockabilly or pinup look) is going to be a lot softer colors, florals and curves.  It’s a very jarring disconnect.  Invitations generally set the tone for your color scheme and overall wedding style.  CAN you do it?  Sure.  Will anyone look at the invitations and then look at the wedding style and note the disconnect?  Probably not.  Might the invitations look a bit off in the wedding pictures with everything else that’s 1950s and floral?  Probably.

You’re killing me, because those invitations are SO Gatsby fabulous!  But…they’re VERY deco.  Something like this might work better:

http://www.etsy.com/listing/118140204/modern-wedding-invitation-1950s-retro?ref=sr_gallery_5&ga_search_query=wedding+invitation+1950s&ga_order=most_relevant&ga_view_type=gallery&ga_ship_to=US&ga_search_type=all

They don’t scream retro, it’s just a bit of a nod to that style.  Also, fair warning.  I didn’t look at the prices at all, so I have no idea if they’re way out of budget.

@MariContrary:  +1.

The art deco certainly doesn’t flow with the 50’s theme, but I don’t know how many people will really notice. It would drive me crazy if it were my wedding – but the bride is always finicky 🙂

Your colors are pretty much exactly the same as ours! We’re doing a ’20s/art deco ‘theme’

Yeah, with a lace dress and that soft, romantic feel for the overall wedding, I’d keep that going on the invitations too.  Doesn’t have to be flowery or obvious, you can still keep the clean lines, just nothing too harsh and geometric feeling.  I think your wedding’s going to be gorgeous!

@crocodilerock:  I’m gonna be the contrarian and say who cares? Those invitations are gorgeous, your pallete is beautiful. Only people like us Bees will really notice that the invite is a slightly different style than the wedding itself.

As long as the level of formality is the same, do whatever makes you happy.

Gold borders on the invitations, or one of the design elements in gold is always pretty 🙂
