Okay so I just wanted the other bee’s advice. My wedding was unfortunately cancelled so I am selling my stuff in the classifieds. I have someone interested in buying my dress and before even getting answers to questions they had about it said they wanted me to mark it sold. And that they would arrange for someone to come pick it up after they pay for it.
She says she is an oceanographer and out at sea and the dress isn’t even for her it’s for her sister. She wants to pay through paypal which is good but the whole situation just seems really off to me. Like I will pay you for your dress asap and then send some random person to come pick it up from you. I know it’s paypal but it just sounds like a scam to me, like she is going to get the dress and then argue the payment she made or something….I don’t know does this sound odd to anyone else?
Any advice is welcome

NO IT IS A SCAM!!! I have unfortunately been through this at least twice!!! It will seem legit because paypal will send you some kind of message but no it is not!!! Please don’t fall victim to this!

@prettypincushion: Sounds like a scam. I’ve seen basically the same story only they were “in the navy” instead of an oceanographer. I wouldn’t do it.

You’re right to be suspicious, this sounds like a scam. Don’t know if you’re using Craigslist, but it’s a common scam for a buyer to send a message with a “link” to register for Paypal, but that link may give the buyer access to your bank details. If you send any message back to them at all, I would recommend saying that you’ll only complete the transaction in person and the buyer can Paypal the money to the person picking the dress up (and that person can in turn give you cash or check).

@prettypincushion: Sounds no good to me. Be very careful! Don’t give them your paypal address because they might hack it.

Scam. Anytime they say that they want to buy your dress and will be sending someone to pick it up and wiring you the money, don’t do it!

@prettypincushion: it is a scam lol. Those people make fraudulent email from PayPal to make you think they paid you when they really didn’t and she’s probanly going to say her friend cancelled so you need to ship it. Just ignore her lol

It’s a scam. Any mention of being overseas and using paypal – AVOID.

Always a scam. Any time anyone wants to send you money (usually Western Union) and have an “agent” come pick it up because they’re “in a foreign country,” it’s a scam.

- Wedding: January 2013 - Harbourfront Grand Hall
@prettypincushion: If they’re coming to pick it up in person they should pay in person. I’m not a fan of Paypal….
Also, don’t mark it sold until you have cash in hand and dress out the door. I dealt with so much BS trying to sell mine, it’s at a consignment shop right now so I don’t have to deal with it anymore! Good luck!

Definitely sounds like a scam!

PayPal does NOT protect sellers well at all. If someone claims they never got it, you’ll have to prove they DID. They can also claim it’s not what they wanted and you have to PROVE IT IS. So…….unfortunately that’s a really typical scam, for people to buy things and then claim they didn’t get it and get their money back. And you’re just screwed.
