My cats tend to play a lot at night, but they do sleep for part of it. I would recommend playing with your kitty a lot before bed, to tucker him out.
Also, keep a litterbox where he can find it. When you go to bed, close your door. If he really has to go, he will use the box.

Our cats sleep with us at night. One sleeps under the covers by my feet, and the other sleeps in between my Darling Husband and Me

I have no idea how, but our cat sleeps when we sleep. We got her at the shelter, and we placed his satin pajamas in a box that she seemed to like sitting in and sometimes napped in. We put the box upstairs next to our bed.
We also say, “Toffee, bedtime!” before we shut the lights. I think that somehow preps her to know that it’s time to sleep. Sometimes she doesn’t sleep, but sit in the box until we’re asleep! Then she goes downstairs to play quietly to herself.
But we’ve gotten her a felt hut afterwards, and transferred the satin pajamas in it. When we’re pulling our covers over us we could see her shadow leaping into the hut. We’ve also discovered that she is enemies with Snoopy. I have a Snoopy plush that I got for my Fiance. We used to place him next to her to give her comfort when she was a kitten, but now she sees him as a rival!
She beats him up and drags him around. What’s even more funny is that if we leave him in her hut, she’ll drag him out and push him down the stairs! We tried using a different stuffed toy, but she seems to have some animosity towards Snoopy!
