Nope.  My MIL lives 3 hours away, including a ferry ride over a large body of water.

Nope! Sometimes they’ll pop by on short notice (as in they call “We’ll be in your area, can we stop by and drop X off/pick up Y while we’re there?”). They live about 10-15 minutes away (just a little closer than my parents). My parents have showed up unannonced maybe once or twice, but it was literally just to drop something off quick.

Never, and she’s promised she and my FIL never will.

My MIL lives 3,000 miles away, so that’s a resounding no.  That being said, I do like my in-laws so I probably wouldn’t mind if they turned up unannounced from time to time. Any more frequently, I’d probably get bothered if they didn’t call before showing up.

They don’t turn up unannounced at my SILs’ homes though and they live close to them. I think we’ll be ok once we move back closer to them.

OP…that is a bummer. Not cool on MIL’s part to show up where she knows she’s not welcome. Sorry you have to deal with that.

Never…but she lives 8 hours away!  My mom often comes on short notice (2 hrs) but always calls first to see if I’m there (we usually go shopping).

My IL’s live 2 minutes away. They don’t normally come by unannounced but I wouldn’t be phased in they did. They’re awesome & I love them! I hang out with them without my husband all the time. 🙂

My FMIL is very big on not over-stepping boundaries, so she would never just stop by. Wouldn’t your FI be pissed if he knew she stopped by?….I’d assume she’d still have to hear it from him, whether he was there or not 😉

My MIL is a very nice lady who always asks before coming over.  My FIL is an unpleasant man, but even he still calls to say he’s coming over.

I’d say never, but recently she felt it was okay for her to come into our house while we were at work, and drop off some check she needed DH to pay on something. Just totally nonchalant, “oh I left it on your counter.” Like wtf?!

@SapphireSun:  Nope! One of the benefits of her living in the Cayman Islands…

No – my mother in law lives about 9 hours away, and even when she lived 4 hours away she wouldn’t do that.

@joya_aspera:  As immature as this is, I kind of giggle at the idea of making her deeply regret stopping by…ie-making it seem as if she caught you and FI in the middle of something, or something else ridiculous!

I was previously engaged and my then FMIL would come over and come right in any time she pleased. It drove me crazy.

One day I came home from work with a migraine and was changing out of my work clothes to take a nap. I needed something from the laundry room, so I walked over to it half dressed. While I was in the laundry room who walks in WITH guests. Yep, FMIL herself. … There was no way back to the bedroom without going past the entryway. So I bolted back to the bedroom and threw on some clothes.

    So awesome.
