    Here in the Midwest (where I have lived my whole 32 years – both coasts of Michigan specifically) most homes have basements.  Some super small older homes have a crawlspace instead – just nasty dirt floor and low ceilings where you can put the AC and heater and water softner (if you have well).  All the homes I’ve lived in have had a basement, as do those of all my relatives around Michigan and Ohio, except the ones who own property on Lake Michigan.  Because… Lake Michigan in your basement – they have a walk out on the beach, instead.

    My brother lives in Texas.  Land is cheap and abundant.  It also hardly ever rains, so when it does it floods everything below ground level.  Bad combo for basements.  Most homes are on a slab and 2-3 stories instead.

    OR girl here: nicer houses had basements, but also normal for houses not to have basements.
