Any change in food?  Does the dog get on the bed?  If so, any changes in laundry detergent?

My dog did this but it was during us renovating our patio so we think he was having an issue with so much dirt. We took him to the vet and he said that was probably what it was, and Benadryl is safe for (most) dogs. He also gave us stronger pills in case his itching was getting really out of control. The Benadryl did seem to work very well with him and we rarely gave him the stronger pills. We gave him 1 mg/lb– he’s about 50 lbs so we gave him two 25 mg pills of Benadryl, no more than once every eight hours. Luckily, our dog stopped having the problem once the patio was done.

Check with your vet before giving him anything, of course, because there apparently are circumstances where a dog shouldn’t have Benadryl (such as “when your dog has prostatic disease, hyperthyroidism or glaucoma” http://wiki.answers.com/Q/How_much_Benadryl_can_you_give_a_dog).

I wonder why her dog is itching though…

hmm… never had her have itchy paws, but she does tear up her back sometimes during the season changes. she could try giving her dog 1/2 a chlorotab 2 times a day (it’s like $2 at walmart) and if she/he stops itching then you know if it’s allergies or not.

@nqz100: wow, that’s really extreme! i hope the vet can determine what it is, if so give us an update in case someone else runs across this problem and is looking for a solution! poor pup!

Aww poor puppy! My dog sometimes gets “hot spots” where he will itch incessently untill he is bleeding.  Never on his paws but it could be that? Good luck at the vet.

Petsmart sells little booties.  Maybe try to see if using those would help it heal enough to stop bleeding.

they also make ‘lotion’ type stuff for dogs paw pads.  maybe they are so dry they are itching really bad. also..for the dogs that scratch & chew on their backs near their tails (or anywhere for that matter), have you checked to see if they are allergic to fleas.  my parents have a shih-tzu (sp?) and she used to do that to the point she would bleed and get scabs, and come to find out, she is allergic to fleas (she’ll pick up sand fleas occasionally from the yard in the summertime).  My mom bought some spray stuff for it…and hydrocortisone cream helps too.
