I would be so appreciative to hear what vehicles you own, how you like it, how your dog likes it, and any other thoughts you may have.
My husband’s company is talking about moving us back to Alaska, so we’ll be needed a second vehicle for me. In Alaska, I take my dog with me pretty much everywhere, so that is one of my main concerns when choosing a second vehicle. I am basically looking for a mom-car, but more like a dog-mom car.
- AWD or 4×4
- ~$25k New (base model, of course)
- Automatic Transmission
- Low enough that my dog won’t get anxiety (we had a pickup when we lived there before and he hated it), but high enough ground clearance for when we get a foot of snow overnight
- Big enough back seat to harness two ~75lb dogs (I want to get a second dog when we move back home)
- 5 star safety
I am thinking about the Subaru Forester or Crosstrek or maybe the Jeep Renegade? What do you guys think? What do you have?

I have the dog edition Honda element that came with a crate & ramp and fan, along with amusing pawprint rubber mats and seat covers with dogs on them. I love it because I am a quirky person, but I don’t think they make it anymore.

I have a CRV, which I think fits all those needs. We have a dog quilt that goes over the entire back seat , down to the floor and back up to the back of the front seats. Our two dogs like it just fine. It made my insurance go down because it has great saftety ratings and all wheel drive.

We have two large dogs (50 lb and 65 lb) and we just bought the new CRV. It’s in your price range, has AWD, and so many fun features that come standard (backup camera, bluetooth, Apple Carplay). Not sure that you could fit two 75 lb dogs in the back back, but if you put the back row down (goes completely flat) you totally could, and have tons of extra space.
We decided on the CRV specifically with our dogs and a future baby in mind.

I drive a Honda Fit and it’s the perfect fit for our dog mobile. It is just front wheel drive but has been fine in fairly snowy Idaho winters. But I was just looking at Honda HRVs which seem like a cross between Fits and CRVs.
We have 2 dogs – one is small (around 12 lbs) and the other is about 60 lbs. it’s low enough that they can both hop in and out easily on their own.

I have an AWD RAV4 and it’s perfect for our 2 dogs, 100 lb black lab and 50 lb bulldog.

SunflowerGarden : we have an Impreza hatchback and it’s great for our 90 pound pup but then we had a baby and it’s getting tight. He sits with the carseat just fine but once we have a second kid we will be out of room.

I have a hard top Jeep Wrangler! Not sure if it would be to high for your dogs! I have three, a westie and two English bulldogs and they love it! I moved them in the jeep across the country! I do use a dog hammock.

I also have a CR-V and it works well for my 75 and 45lb dogs. I looked at a Crosstrek when I bought my car, but it didn’t quite have the ‘pick-up’ I wanted when driving (I was going from a 6-cyl truck to a 4-cyl SUV), and it was a little smaller.
